It encourages focus on the heritage of Celtic saints like Oswald, Aidan, Cuthbert and Hild. St Oswald, a Christian king, brought monks from Iona to Lindisfarne, spreading Christianity in Northumbria. Bede notes his tomb was marked by Britain's oldest known flag, a gold and purple banner, hence the colouring of this finger-labyrinth. Gold is linked with illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion and wisdom. It stands for what is precious and valuable, majesty, joy, celebration and the presence of God.
