Be stronger than each storm in me A4 print

    , , ,
Lynda Owen-Hussey, a companion with the Northumbria Community, is a mixed media artist living on the shores of the West Coast of Ireland in County Kerry, close to the birthplace of St Brendan. These days, her work is inspired by the many gifts of the sea she encounters on walks along the shore, often pondering the life of St Brendan and the many monks of old who inhabited this land. In describing this original artwork Lynda says:

This artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Christ of the mysteries, can I trust you to be stronger than each storm in me?

We read that Brendan and his companions cried out in prayer as they encountered storms on the ocean, trusting God as they sailed on in search of the land of promise. In Mark 6 we find Jesus’s disciples in a boat straining against the wind and becoming terrified as they see Jesus walking out to them over the water. He calls out to his disciples ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ As he climbs into the boat the wind ceases. We too can cry out to God when we find ourselves in the midst of life’s storms trusting that Jesus is with us always.

Help me to journey beyond the familiar 210mm square print

These days, her work is inspired by the many gifts of the sea she encounters on walks along the shore, often pondering the life of St Brendan and the many monks of old who inhabited this land. In describing this original artwork Lynda says:

Painted whilst on retreat at Nether Springs, the Mother House of the Northumbria Community,  this artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Lord, I will trust You, help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.

Brendan’s journey begins as his heart is stirred by a vision that takes him beyond his present circumstances and surroundings. In Genesis 12 we find Abram, who like Brendan, followed the call of God to leave the familiar comforts of home and venture towards the land of promise. Sometimes we hear that call ourselves, but oftentimes it is discomfort or the unexpected which proves to be the catalyst that opens us afresh to seeking out new ways as we journey in trust.

My times are still in Your hands 210mm square print

I will trust in the darkness and know that my times are still in Your hand.

Brendan and his companions spent years on the sea as they searched for, and eventually found, the promised land. In Psalm 31, King David in the midst of difficulty places his trust in God recalling that his times are in God’s hands. Likewise we are called to trust God in the dark and difficult desert days we can find ourselves in.

More Than Many Sparrows: A4 signed print

    ,
So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:31 (NIV) Background: The song ‘More Than Many Sparrows’ [http://www.andyseveryn.com/video] was written by Andy Severyn who was a leader of the 'Cross Purposes' School Mission Team of the Sion Catholic Community. I owned a much loved tape that included the song after meeting another member of the Schools Team when performing Christian Theatre and Dance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and played it to stretching point! As some songs do, it remained a favourite that I returned to year after year and it was a pleasure to use it as inspiration for my work. Holy Island is blessed to be home to more than its fair share of sparrows too and they are a daily reminder of how much God loves and values each one of us. More Than Many Sparrows (used in the piece and reprinted here with permission) I know a boy who once believed That he was not worth much at all If he passed exams or scored a goal He would win some brief applause Then back again to try again To get some more attention Look at me, can’t you see I just want to be known Those words were mine, but since those days Someone showed me what I’m worth Just the same as any man Or any woman on this earth He died for me to set me free From thinking that I’m not loveable He died for you to say to you “This is what you’re worth…” More than many sparrows More than brightest gold You’re worth more than people tell you So much more than people know Someone put a price on you He said, “You’re worth dying for” Yes, you’re precious in the eyes of the Lord So there’s no need to be afraid That we don’t deserve his love Good or bad, great or small It’s a free gift from above So let him in, let him bring The truth your heart is waiting for Jesus lives, Jesus gives The value of your heart © 1990 A. Sing For Joy: A4 signed print

    ,
Let the heavens be glad, Let the earth rejoice Let the land exult - and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy. Bible Passages: Psalm 96: 11-12 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Luke 19:37-40 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’, ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’ ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’ Background: We are completely dependent on our environment, created, like us, from dust. Saying that the trees will sing or the stones cry out is not to give them some fantastical sentience but to remind us that the miracle of their existence reflects God’s glory, power and creativity, and we do the same. These and Other Things: A4 signed print

    ,
He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (John 21:6 NIV) Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. (John 21:25 NIV) Background: This passage has for many years been significant to us as a family and to the Scriptorium as a business and we have used an image of it as our logo for many years. To me this story of Jesus after the resurrection speaks of trust and faith. There must have been something about the voice of the stranger who shouted from the shore, the disciples couldn’t tell it was Jesus and they weren’t expecting to hear His voice but the tone of His voice perhaps held a strangely familiar authority and conviction. The disciples had experienced a dark, unproductive night - Jesus told them, at the point they were probably thinking of giving up, to try fishing again in a different place. Our lives often experience unproductive 'dark nights', times when nothing seems to be going right. Our resources, often both physical and emotional, are on empty and we can’t see our way towards fruitfulness and restoration. The message of the 'casting nets' is to trust God's guidance, to keep trying (perhaps push at new doors, try new ways) and to have faith that however dark and however long, each night will end in a new day. "Come and have breakfast!" (John 21:12) Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock

To You This Day: A4 signed print

    ,
My God I give to You this day, Each word I think and say and pray, Each action and each small step, on the way. I give my life to You this day. Background: The prayer in this piece, inspired by an old children's prayer, could be used every day but the thinking behind it is as a prayer to say on each day of Lent. The time before Easter is a chance to prepare for the revelation of new Life. We may take time to consider that victory of life over death, what it means to truly die to self and what difference it makes to the everyday activity of living here in the world. The blossom flowers, growing from what appears to be the dead branches of a desolate tree, neatly symbolise life persisting in the face of death as we are reminded every Spring when the seemingly barren begins to live again. Blessed Are: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2015 Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. (John 20:29) Background: To be a Christian is to believe in the seemingly impossible. We don’t have the luxury of being able to actually see and touch and hear the voice of Jesus as the Disciples did, we have to settle for a second hand experience of Jesus, but is that entirely true? Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) sums up how we can experience Jesus today and by doing so see the fruits of the legacy He left. Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. When we willingly behave as Jesus did we meet Him in the people and places, we meet Him in the darkness and the pain and in the joy and the hope of living. It isn’t the same as placing our hand in the crucifixion wounds; or sitting at His feet, listening to His voice and the message He gave; and Jesus knew that His followers would feel that loss. So the last words that he spoke on earth were a blessing specifically for you. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Caim: A4 signed print

    ,
Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that...'"Caim" was originally designed as a CD cover for an album of prayers set to music by the same name, therefore the imagery reflects themes of the music included, however as is often the case the illustration evolved into something which speaks beyond the obvious inspiration. The hand seems to reach out in a loving, gentle gesture to caress the face of the Creator, symbolised by the star (Revelation 22:16 ‘I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.’). The complex knotwork intersperses three overlapping circles which represent the Trinity and the patterns and colours are life patterns, weaving and merging, coloured by experiences, actions and reactions.' Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Christ is Risen: A4 signed print

    , ,
Created: 2013 Words: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Background: This piece is a celebration of the Easter message, that Christ is risen. The words are illuminated in Spring colours, with reminders of the season, flowers and birds in flight, intermingled with blood red flowing from the cross where the wounds of Christ would have been. The cross is deliberately empty to remind us of the resurrection and there is a shape around it that echoes a holding cross to remind us that we can ‘hold on’ to His promises. Come to Me: A4 signed print

    ,
Words: Matthew 11:28 (New American Standard Bible ©1995) "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that...'Jesus offers rest to those of us who are burdened with the weights of sin, fear, worry and the absence of purpose. The loads we carry may be hardly noticeable at first but if not released into Gods waiting hand have a habit of becoming heavier until their weight affects our every movement, slowing us spiritually and eventually crippling our effectiveness as the human children of our Heavenly Father. When Jesus spoke the words it was thought that He was addressing the Jews who were burdened and trapped by the complex and numerous laws and traditions but it is an offer which He makes to everyone today. Often the things in our lives that keep us from loving God and each other completely are burdens of our own making and are tightly bound with our human tendency to sin and then to hide from the God who can reveal those sins to us so we end up carrying a burden of guilt and fear. To God our burdens are tiny and light. He wants to relieve us of them. It may take some effort and courage to recognise and release our heavy loads but it is worth it to be able to stand upright and skip onwards (metaphorically speaking) in life without constraint.' Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Words: Follow Him Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us...'This is a call to follow Jesus, His way to the Father. Interspersed with the meandering of life and time depicted by the woven knotwork we see others who have followed and from whom we can learn more about God and how to follow Him. The characters are Zaccheus the tax collector; Saul/Paul who had a dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus; Jesus' disciples who left everything to follow; the shepherds who dared to visit a new born King; the wise men from the east who followed a star for years, knowing that it was God's sign to the world; Brendan who left his home to go wherever God would take him and Aidan whose passion for God enabled him to communicate with the barbarous Northumbrians!' Help Me Dear Lord: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2010 Words: Help me Dear Lord, to care too much, to love too freely, to pray unceasingly, to forgive endlessly, to laugh fearlessly, to question, to live, to be who I am, to be where I am, to be what I am, to hope, to believe, to reach out my hand. Background: The 'Help Me' poem was written as a response to a piece of art I created called The Name of the Lord and was published in my Life in Christ book. Somehow it needed to become more than just another poem and be allowed to grow into a piece of art in its own right. Much of the artwork around the words takes the form of decoration or illumination and serves as a vehicle for meditating on the words, try following the weaving lines with your finger or eye. The rest of the artwork illustrates the words of the poem with additional ways of thinking about them, so a hand resting on a head with the words 'seventy times seven' represents 'To forgive endlessly' and a blooming colourful flower with the phrase 'water often' is the image for 'To live' - suggesting that we aim for a full, vivid life regularly 'watered' with the presence of God. Journey: A4 signed print

    ,
Words: None Background: Artist Mary Fleeson comments...'The design of ‘Journey’ was an experiment inspired by a manuscript at the British Library. The parchment I saw had been painted with a rich purple-red ink and the script was formed using gold ink which appeared coppery in colour. Therefore I formed my cross in a similar way and to achieve the layered textural depth effect I experimented with collage. The working title for the piece was ‘Unknown Journey’, its layers representing C.S Lewis’ view of death as an ‘onward and upward’ journey to a better, brighter, more ‘real’ place.' Source: "The Lord's Prayer in the Principal Languages, Dialects and Versions of the World, printed in Type and Vernaculars of the Different Nations, compiled and published by G.F. Bergholtz", Chicago, Illinois, 1884. Translation for ‘Our Father’: Our Father in heaven rich, Thy name be blessed I wish, Lead us Lord into thy bliss, Let us never thy riches miss. Let us Lord accept alone That thy will be ever done Also as it is in heaven In earth may it be even, The heaven bread that lasteth today Give us Lord this same day, Forgive us Lord to our bone All that we have here misdone, Also as we wisely forgave While we in this world live All that here us misdo And we beseech thee too, Lead us Lord to our testing And shield us from all evil thing. Adapted using a medieval dictionary & a bit of imagination - language scholars please excuse any horrible mistakes. The modern version interwoven with the old: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. From the Church of England ‘Common Worship’ publications, published by Church House. Praise Him with the Sound: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2011 Praise Him with the strings and flutes. Praise Him with the sound of trumpets, with the flute and harp, with the timbrel and dance. I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise to Your name. Background: Music has been called many things, 'the food of love', 'the literature of the heart', 'the shorthand of emotion', 'what life sounds like'. One of the great things about music is that it can convey emotion and story without words therefore it is universal, it "expresses feeling and thought without language; it was below and before speech, and it is above and beyond all words," (R G Ingersoll). The Voyager spacecraft's carry a disc which contains images and sounds, including music, waiting to be discovered by any passing extra-terrestrials. The words 'To the makers of music - all worlds, all times' were written on the disc, probably more as a statement to the inhabitants of our world rather than any other, but they, and that of music being included on the disc, declares to the universe that music is one of the most important gifts we, as humans, possess. Even where hearing is diminished or lost completely the vibration of a beat can be felt and enjoyed and it's speed or rhythm can convey a simple message. Although this piece does contain words from the Psalms, the main emphasis is on the pattern and colours of the image. It is intended to be a graphic composition, weaving strands of sound, repeating tunes, some complex, some simple, and throughout all a unifying theme of colours and shapes. Remember Me: A4 signed print

    ,
Background: ‘Remember’ is a celebration of Christ’s words to His disciples, 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:23-25, NIV) Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that...'The image includes the empty tomb and the angel standing outside with Jesus and Mary in the garden, the road to Emmaus, a bright star – to remind us of His birth and the light He brought to a fallen world and Jesus carrying the cross as a symbol of carrying the sin of the world. The rich knotwork pattern behind is the backdrop to the royal story of The King of the Universe. The large knot reminds us of our life journey and how God wants us to be immersed, surrounded and sharing in His journey.' The Beginning: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2013 Words: In principio erat Verbum et Verbum erat apud Deum et Deus erat Verbum. In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God. Background: The illuminated manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels were made on Lindisfarne by a monk called Eadfrith between 698 and 721. He created it ‘for God and for St Cuthbert’. The book contains the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John: the four Evangelists. The text of the Lindisfarne Gospels is in Latin with a word-by-word translation into Old English added between the lines in the 10th century. It is the oldest surviving translation of the Gospels into the English language. The manuscript itself, for many reasons, resides at the British Library in London but occasionally it returns to the Northeast for a visit. In 2013 Durham was host and as part of the celebrations I created this piece to show how the purpose of the Lindisfarne Gospels, to glorify God and to draw attention to His Word, is continuing today. The illuminated Gospels created on the Island over a thousand years ago continue to be a big inspiration to my work and the Gospel of John became the foundation of the Celtic Christian faith, therefore it was an easy choice to use the beginning of John’s Gospel and the symbolic image of St John as the eagle together with my more meandering style of modern Celtic Knotwork to show the continuation of giving glory to God through art. I have included the word ‘beginning’ to show that the roots of my work lie in the labours of artists who committed their gifting to God, I aim to do the same, ‘For the glory of God alone’.

    Mary Fleeson, March 2013.

The Lord will watch over you: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2014 Psalm 121 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and for evermore. Background: The words of Psalm 121 are a great comfort to believers even today. To be reassured that the God who created you cares enough about you, as an individual, to keep a protective eye on your daily activities is wonderful. But what about the times when we feel abandoned? The times when we feel like the ground beneath us is crumbling and God is perhaps too busy elsewhere to be concerned about our little life? Those are the times when we need to read those words and see them as more than comfort, they are in fact a promise. Jesus said to His disciples, and therefore to his followers today, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Life may not always be easy, we were never promised that, but we are not expected to live God’s will in our own strength, our ‘help comes from the Lord’ in many diverse ways, sometimes we just have to be willing to accept it. Words: Isaiah 43 v 1 & 2 But now, this is what the LORD says - he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. Background: Artist Mary Fleeson comments...'There is something very intimate about saying to someone you love, ‘You are mine’. It has an air of possessiveness and pride, dirty words in most civilised company and yet when it is said by someone who loves you unconditionally, someone who would always put your wellbeing first, someone who would die for you, then it is transformed into words of power and love because it carries no threat. Many of the messages in Isaiah speak of God’s love for His children throughout time, we are all ‘Precious and honoured in [His] sight.’ (v.4) and we can know that whatever may come our way God will be with us. Note that Isaiah says ‘when’ you pass through the water and the fire, not ‘if’, God isn’t telling us that we can avoid the difficult, unpleasant and dangerous parts of living, just that He will not ask us to confront these trials alone.'
