Sing For Joy: A4 signed print

Bible Passages: Psalm 96: 11-12 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Luke 19:37-40 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’, ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’ ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’ Background: We are completely dependent on our environment, created, like us, from dust. Saying that the trees will sing or the stones cry out is not to give them some fantastical sentience but to remind us that the miracle of their existence reflects God’s glory, power and creativity, and we do the same. Creativity, Spiritual GrowthCreated: 2014 Psalm 121 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and for evermore. Background: The words of Psalm 121 are a great comfort to believers even today. To be reassured that the God who created you cares enough about you, as an individual, to keep a protective eye on your daily activities is wonderful. But what about the times when we feel abandoned? The times when we feel like the ground beneath us is crumbling and God is perhaps too busy elsewhere to be concerned about our little life? Those are the times when we need to read those words and see them as more than comfort, they are in fact a promise. Jesus said to His disciples, and therefore to his followers today, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Life may not always be easy, we were never promised that, but we are not expected to live God’s will in our own strength, our ‘help comes from the Lord’ in many diverse ways, sometimes we just have to be willing to accept it. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Love is Patient: A4 signed print
Creativity, Spiritual GrowthThis beautiful print by Mary Fleeson includes the words, 'Love is always patient and kind. Love is not boastful or conceited. It is never rude, and never seeks its own advantage. It does not take offence or store up grievances. Love does not rejoice in wrong doing but finds its joy in the truth. It always ready to make allowances, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. These remain: faith, hope and love, and the greatest is love'. It is based on 1 Corinthians 13 (v. 4-13). A good exercise is to replace the word 'love' with your own name to see if you are fulfilling the words yourself - It's not an easy task but one worth aspiring to! Christ-centred Living: A4 signed print
Creativity, Spiritual GrowthBackground: This piece was the result of meditating on what defines a Christ centred life . I wanted to show the fruitfulness that comes from a life rooted in the cross of Christ and the refreshment and cleansing available to us. In the spirals I wanted to express the vibrancy of a Christ-centred life and four aspects of life; birth, death, spirituality and growth. Each arm of the spiral, each aspect of life, is cross hatched and bumpy with patches of light and dark, showing the erratic nature of living. Each arm ends but its outline turns back towards the cross, showing that everything came from God and returns to God. The development of the design started with a stave and a treble and bass clef, and then I added swirling interlinking lines to echo the complexity of music twisting and turning in unexpected directions. I chose purple as a colour of kingship of the Lord whose song we are singing.£12.50 -

Creativity, Spiritual GrowthHe said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (John 21:6 NIV) Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. (John 21:25 NIV) Background: This passage has for many years been significant to us as a family and to the Scriptorium as a business and we have used an image of it as our logo for many years. To me this story of Jesus after the resurrection speaks of trust and faith. There must have been something about the voice of the stranger who shouted from the shore, the disciples couldn’t tell it was Jesus and they weren’t expecting to hear His voice but the tone of His voice perhaps held a strangely familiar authority and conviction. The disciples had experienced a dark, unproductive night - Jesus told them, at the point they were probably thinking of giving up, to try fishing again in a different place. Our lives often experience unproductive 'dark nights', times when nothing seems to be going right. Our resources, often both physical and emotional, are on empty and we can’t see our way towards fruitfulness and restoration. The message of the 'casting nets' is to trust God's guidance, to keep trying (perhaps push at new doors, try new ways) and to have faith that however dark and however long, each night will end in a new day.
