Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis downloadable pdf contains the Finan daily readings from CDP1 (The Journey Begins) for the month of July. The city without a church These readings are extracted from The City Without a Church by Henry Drummond. An introduction: The City Without a Church is a meditation by Henry Drummond on a selection of verses from Revelation chapters 21 (verses 2 and 22) and 22 (verses 2 and 3). Extracts from it feature in the Finan series of readings for July in Celtic Daily Prayer and it has become an important text for the Northumbria Community because it deals with ‘church without walls’ and ‘kingdom in the streets’; in fact it dovetails very neatly with the Community’s Rule which states: We embrace the challenge to live as ‘church without walls’, living openly amongst unbelievers and other believers in a way that the life of God in ours can be seen, challenged or questioned. This will involve us building friendships outside our Christian ghettos or club-mentality, not with ulterior evangelistic motives, but because we genuinely care. Buechner's ABC This month’s readings go through the Alphabet and draw from the words of Frederick Buechner (pronounced BEEK-ner). Buechner’s work has often been praised for its ability to inspire readers to see the grace in their daily lives. In three of his books Peculiar Treasures: A Biblical Who’s Who; Wishful Thinking: A Seeker’s ABC and Whistling in the Dark: A Doubter’s Dictionary, he tries to dust-off and put the colour back into Biblical characters, religious words, and ordinary words, respectively. In the World This month of readings seeks to help us push past the artificial divide between the secular and the sacred, the physical and the spiritual, the body and the soul, and move, as Barbara Brown Taylor says, towards "trusting that there is no way to God apart from real life in the real world". later this month we will hear from Charles Ringma, but we begin with excerpts from An Altar in the World by Barbara Brown Taylor. Here are some words from her introduction: Whoever you are, you are human. Wherever you are, you live in the world, which is just waiting for you to notice the holiness in it. So welcome to your own priesthood, practised at the altar of your own life. The good news is that you have everything you need to begin. Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis downloadable pdf contains the Colman daily readings from CDP2 (Further Up and Further In) for the month of February.£2.00Three monks and a donkey
This month of readings have been written by Sarah Pillar out of her personal journey of discovery and pilgrimage. In researching the town of Evesham where she and her family live, Sarah stumbled upon this story which we’ve affectionately called ‘Three Monks and a Donkey’. The three monks are Aldwin, Reinfrid and Elfwy. They began their journey in Evesham in the year 1074, travelling North to the ancient Northumbrian sites. Nearly a thousand years ago, in the midst of political and social upheaval, they discover, as many of us have, that the simple, obedient lives of the Northumbrian saints inspire a new way for living for times such as ours. Threads of God’s story within this story have enriched our Community heritage leading us to celebrate Easter in 2009 as a Community in Evesham. It brings us a hope that in the 21st century, we too might rekindle the light of Christ in our communities, repair broken altars and rebuild foundations of old in our own changing and challenging times. Celtic Daily Prayer 2: Daily Readings: Colman: January: PDF download
Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis downloadable pdf contains the Colman daily readings from CDP2 (Further Up and Further In) for the month of January. Monastic Diseases: Monastic diseases are coping mechanisms - attitudes and actions that can bring dis-ease to ourselves and to others around us. All of us have the potential to catch any and all of the diseases - the main problem lies in denial or wrong diagnosis or no diagnosis at all, i.e. being unaware of them. Monastic diseases are closely related to the logismoi, those repetitive thoughts and preoccupations that can distract us from the spiritual path, and which inflame the inner monsters of our negative memories, moods and secrets triggered by all sorts of people, issues and situations, as well as our desire for comfort and consolation; all of which find expression in false expectations and unrealistic ambitions which are basically egotistical. There is so much in us of anger, aggression, selfishness, hurt, deception and damage that can only be rooted out by patient, faithful loving commitment to seeing God and knowing self, our limitations, boundaries and weaknesses, for only then can we deal with them. Celtic Daily Prayer 2: Daily Readings: Colman: November: PDF download
Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis downloadable pdf contains the Colman daily readings from CDP2 (Further Up and Further In) for the month of November. Living The Questions: One of our heart-felt convictions as a Community is that each of us should learn to ‘embrace the Heretical Imperative’, to question everything boldly in order to understand something deeper about who God is, who we are, and what our purpose is in the work of God in the world, alone and together. Some truth can only be found, fought for, and embraced by asking questions. When we are faced with the reality of lives that are complex, messy and full of paradox, in the context of a rapidly changing world, quick answers are often at best unhelpful. If we choose a different approach, we find ourselves living the questions. This month of daily readings is a collection of questions, thoughts, and provocations that reflect something of life back to us and urge us to ponder our spiritual awakening and growth. Celtic Daily Prayer 2: Daily Readings: Colman: September: PDF download
Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis downloadable pdf contains the Colman daily readings from CDP2 (Further Up and Further In) for the month of September. Hospitality: When we say YES to the practice of hospitality, do we immediately think of inviting our friends around for a meal with a good bottle of wine? Does hospitality for us mean a pleasant social setting, food and drink shared with people we like and in places where we are comfortable? Our understanding and lifestyle may have become quite limited, for hospitality has far broader possibilities than these! This month of readings will hopefully help us to expand our narrow definitions of hospitality and encourage us into far more radical ways of opening ourselves to others. In reading the Gospels we find that Christ did indeed share plenty of meals and some wine too with people, but in a way that was out of keeping with the polite practices of the day, that even disturbed polite society. And his practice of hospitality extended beyond the meal table and the home and out onto the roads and waysides, where he journeyed in anticipation of personal encounter with individuals and with crowds, always with an attitude of openness and welcome, available, always vulnerable. These words invite us to re-think our understanding of hospitality, to become braver, let down some barriers, let go of our prejudices, walk headlong into true availability and vulnerability by extending a hospitality of heart. Celtic Daily Prayer 2: Daily Readings: Eata: Dec: PDF download
Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis downloadable pdf contains the Eata daily readings from CDP2 (Further Up and Further In) for the month of December. Deeper Magic This month's readings are taken from the works of George MacDonald, C.S. Lewis and Madeleine L'Engle. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish author, poet and Christian minister. His writings, which draw deeply on the indigenous spirituality of the pre-clearance Highlands and folk memory of the people, have been cited as a major literary influence by many notable authors. C.S. Lewis once said "I have never concealed the fact that I regarded George MacDonald as my master; indeed I fancy I have never written a book in which I did not quote from him." Madeleine L'Engle says " Surely George MacDonald is the grandfather of us all - all of us who struggle to come to terms with truth through fantasy." Like MacDonald, C.S. Lewis applies his heart, brilliance and imagination to the task of opening another world to us so that we may never look at the inside of a wardrobe in the same way again. As we move, in the middle of this month, from the writings of MacDonald to those of Lewis, our adventures in Narnia awaken in us a deeper homesickness that energises rather than discourages as it bids us to come "farther up and farther in"! Celtic Daily Prayer 2: Daily Readings: Eata: June: PDF download
Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis downloadable pdf contains the Eata daily readings from CDP2 (Further Up and Further In) for the month of June. Sermon on the Mount Once upon a time two women were musing over an idea. What would Jesus do with a group who gathered not for Bible study, not for prayer, not for ministry but just to sit at His feet ... to learn? Meanwhile, unaware of this idea, a third woman had a dream while on holiday. One Wednesday morning the idea and the dream fused over coffee. What eventually transpired was a year-long engagement with the Sermon on the Mount as twelve women wrestled with the words – first memorising them, then pondering them, then staging them as a dramatic presentation. Twenty years later we are still under their spell and trying to put them into practice. This month’s meditations, written by Sarah Berry, are stories, experiences, little pieces of wisdom – and the questions that have come from the adventure of walking with Jesus through this sermon. City Without a Church: PDF download
Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingThis is a downloadable pdf of the booklet "City without a Church" by Henry Drummond, which has been produced as one in a series of booklets exploring responses to one of the basic questions of the Northumbria Community: "How Then Shall We Live?" The city without a church The City Without a Church is a meditation by Henry Drummond on a selection of verses from Revelation chapters 21 (verses 2 and 22) and 22 (verses 2 and 3). Extracts from it feature in the Finan series of readings for July in Celtic Daily Prayer and it has become an important text for the Northumbria Community because it deals with ‘church without walls’ and ‘kingdom in the streets’. Although this meditation is framed in the muscular, self-confident language of the Victorian era, its underlying message to us is as fresh as if it was written yesterday. The message is this: the institutional churches have ‘stolen Christ from the people’. What struck Drummond about John’s vision of the New Jerusalem was not just that he saw a city (rather than some kind of pastoral idyll) but that he saw no temple (or church) there. Although Drummond has hard words for the institutional church, he is by no means anti-church: he just wants it to wake up to the realities of real faith and get its priorities right. For Drummond, this involves getting out of our church buildings and getting totally involved in the concrete realities of our streets − starting right where we are, with the mess of real life all around us. He says that ‘it is only because the secular is so intensely sacred that so many eyes are blind before it.’ When you complete your purchase, you will receive an email with a link to download your pdf. Discernment – reading the signs of daily life
Everyday Life, Influences & Suggested Reading, The Inner JourneyHenri Nouwen understood the spiritual life as a journey of faith and transformation that is deepened by accountability, community and relationships. And the practice of discernment is about how to read the 'signs of the times' in daily life in order to know what to do next. Nouwen believes our calling and mission may be made clear through the people we meet on our path, the circumstances that each day brings, the books and sacred texts we read and meditate on, and through current events. Discernment seeks the will of God, requiring the disciplines of contemplative prayer, compassionate action and theological reflection. Discernment has been compiled by two of Nouwen's longtime students, Michael Christensen and Rebecca Laird, from coursework, journals and unpublished writings.£12.99 -
God in Pain: The mystery of suffering
Everyday Life, Influences & Suggested Reading, Spiritual Growth, The Inner JourneyWe need a God who knows about pain
To speak of God in pain, says Barbara Brown Taylor, is to embrace both the biblical accounts of Christ's suffering and death, and also the God who is present in our pain. This wise and compassionate book seeks to understand that presence with characteristic grace, sensitivity, profound biblical insight and truthfulness to human experience. Part One explores the ways that God's presence can be discerned in the pains we experience in life: disillusionment, despair, betrayal, anger, enmity, family feuds, insult and injury. A series of reflections on biblical texts asks whether any good news can be found in pain. Part Two contemplates God's suffering in the unique pain of Good Friday. Reflecting on the story of Christ's crucifixion, Barbara Brown Taylor goes in search of what God went to such great lengths to reveal to us. God in Pain engages with life's most complex mystery with honesty and finds grounds for hope. -

Precious Thoughts: daily readings from Thomas Merton
Daily Readings, Influences & Suggested Reading, Traditional MonasticismThomas Merton wrote to people of all faiths and none; he wrote to people who were searching, and those who were firmly established in religious orders; he wrote to students, peace activists and `ordinary' people who had read about him and were curious. Some are letters of spiritual direction, a sharing of spiritual insights and social concerns, some more personal. In this carefully selected collection, Merton scholar, Fiona Gardner, has focused on extracts that seem to speak to all who are searching. They have been chosen because they offer an opening into something other - to provide a way into both silence and contemplative prayer.£10.99 -
Reading Buechner: Exploring the Work of a Master Memoirist, Novelist, Theologian, and Preacher
Influences & Suggested ReadingFrederick Buechner is one of the most gifted writers of his generation, and his legacy casts a long shadow over Christian letters today. And as a theologian and preacher, he pioneered the art of making theology accessible for a popular audience. Yet for all Buechner's enormous influence, many readers today are unfamiliar with his work, or have read him only in one genre. In this book, Buechner expert Jeffrey Munroe presents a collection of the true "essentials" from across Buechner's diverse catalog, as well as an overview of Buechner's life and a discussion of the state of his literary legacy today. Here is Buechner in all his complex glory, ready to delight and inspire again.£14.00 -

Seven Sacred Spaces
Influences & Suggested Reading, The Inner Journey, Traditional MonasticismToo often people's understanding of and engagement with 'church' is reduced to corporate worship, when it is so much more. George Lings identifies seven characteristic elements in Christian communities through the ages, which when held in balance enable a richer expression of discipleship, mission and community. In the monastic tradition these elements have distinctive locations: cell (being alone with God), chapel (corporate public worship), chapter (making decisions), cloister (planned and surprising meetings), garden (the place of work), refectory (food and hospitality) and scriptorium (study and passing on knowledge). Through this lens George Lings explores how these seven elements relate to our individual and communal walk with God, hold good for church and family life, and appear in wider society.£10.99 -

The Heart Alone with God
Celtic Prayer, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Core Teaching, Desert Monasticism, Monasticism & New Monasticism, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingCeltic and Desert spirituality was essentially monastic, and praying was learned in the context of cell (alone) and community (together). There was no separation of praying and living; one flowed from the other. For us too, life is prayer and prayer is life. Making inner space to cultivate the God-life within is at the centre of the contemplative experience, which is entering into the self to be with God. This interior life is also a journey through the darkness and dangers of ‘the world, the flesh and the devil’. This booklet explores how we can thwart even the most ‘devious’ of attacks of the enemy and find inner peace as we understand the full meaning and significance of ‘The Heart Alone with God’.£4.00 -
The Luminous Web: Faith, science and the experience of wonder
Influences & Suggested Reading, Scripture & Prayer, Spiritual Growth, The Inner JourneyThe renowned author Barbara Brown Taylor reflects on two different worlds knowledge, science and faith, that are often set in opposition to one another. The one is said to rely on observable fact; the other on subjective belief. With her customary skill and grace, Barbara Brown Taylor demonstrates that these distinctions do not hold. She seeks to discover what the insights of quantum physics, the new biology, and chaos theory can teach a person of faith, why scientists often sound like poets and why physicists call on the language of imagination, beauty and mystery that is also found in scripture. Both science and religion, she finds, are dedicated to searching for truth. Both experience awe. Both are vulnerable to error, but are open to the wonder of discovery. Both are prone to desiring certainty. Both admit that there is an essential messiness to life that makes it unpredictable, that experience will always trip us up no matter what our beliefs, yet both see a symmetry and order that holds things together. Whether our understanding of the origins of the world rests in theoretical physics or God, The Luminous Web opens our eyes afresh to the wonder of creation, where we each belong and where nothing – not even the hairs of our head or a butterfly's wings – is without immense significance.£10.99 -

Things Hidden: scripture as spirituality
Influences & Suggested Reading, Scripture & Prayer, The Inner JourneyOnly when the two come together, inner and outer authority, do we have true spiritual wisdom. We have for too long insisted on outer authority alone, without any teaching of prayer, inner journey and maturing consciousness. The results for the world and for religion have been disastrous ...I offer these reflections to again unite what should never have been separated: sacred Scripture and Christian spirituality.' From the introduction In this exploration of central themes of Scripture, Richard Rohr transforms the written word, discovering in these ancient texts a new and vital meaning, relevant and essential for modern Christians. He uncovers what the Bible says about morality, power, wisdom and the generosity of God in a manner that demands a life-changing response from believers. Rohr offers his readers a Christian vision of abundance, grace and joy to counteract a world filled with scarcity, judgement and fear-a vision that can revolutionize how we relate to ourselves, others and the world.£12.99 -

Celtic Daily Prayer Book 2: Farther Up and Farther In
Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Celtic Prayer, Celtic Sites & Saints, Celtic Studies & Spirituality, Music & Creativity, Northumbria Community Resources & TeachingCeltic Daily Prayer Book 2: Farther Up and Farther In is the long awaited companion volume to Celtic Daily Prayer Book 1: The Journey Begins, also reissued in a new binding. It contains a further two years of daily readings together with a new set of meditations for each day of the month plus prayers and liturgies that speak into real life as we have experienced it. With the exception of the Daily Offices and Complines, which have been re-issued with melody lines for those parts where a sung version exists, the material included is new. Here you will find additional resources for the Times and Seasons of the year and for Rites of Passage. Here too are liturgies and prayers for the significant events and decisions in life. For those seeking fresh resources for corporate worship there are four new Communion services, an Advent liturgy that could work equally well in either a church or home group setting and fourteen new ‘Follow the Example’ liturgies with suggestions for occasions when they may prove helpful. Beautifully bound in a specially commissioned hardback cover with ribbon markers, this book is built to last. Just as well as we anticipate it becoming as much a part of our journey, alone and together, as its treasured elder sibling! The Jesse Tree Pack
Advent & Christmas, Celtic Daily Prayer & Liturgy, Music & Creativity, Northumbria Community Resources & Teaching, Resources for the Christian YearNEW LOWER PRICE Create Your own Jesse Tree at home this Advent with this delightful and richly rewarding resource for individuals, families and churches. Originally published in Celtic Daily Readings (now out of print), this month of readings is presented as an A5 booklet beautifully illustrated with newly commissioned drawings by Francesca Ross, and accompanied by a set of 31 double-sided card ornaments, featuring Francesca’s illustrations, for you to colour, cut out and use at home on your own Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree readings are named after the depictions in stained glass or wood that have been used over many centuries to bring to life the characters who are part of Jesus’ family tree from Jesse through David to Joseph and Mary. In many homes and churches it has become an Advent custom to use a small tree branch as a Jesse Tree and hang it with pictures or ornaments representing the people, prophecies and stories which anticipated the coming of Christ. Some churches have a special Jesse Tree service, during which the whole series of stories is recalled, and the ornaments added, one by one. At home it is probably more beneficial to take one reading, with its accompanying Scriptures, per day, adding the ornaments as you go through the month so that, rather like the pictures in an Advent calendar, more and more appear as Christmas approaches. Some of the drawings and readings remind us of the people who make up Jesus’ family tree. Some instead are rich in prophetic significance, or mark the feasts of Stephen, the ‘holy innocents’ and John the beloved. They remind us of the covenant that Jesus, the promised Messiah, invites us all to enter into with Him. The Jesse Tree can become a much-loved focal point during December that can offset and pre-empt the onset of an increasingly commercial and secularised Christmas. We hope these readings and ornaments will help you to share in this age-old practice and, by providing a focus for prayer and memory and a spur to the imagination, enrich your Advent as they take you on a journey through image and Scripture.£6.00 -

He examines particularly the Community's balance between the interior life ('monastery') and its outward expression (mission'). George Lings concludes: If the need today is for deep people then here is the portal to inner attentiveness in following Jesus and the painful but liberation process of being transformed by Him.' This booklet is part of the Encounters on the Edge series. A downloadable PDF version of the booklet is also available.£1.00 -
