Journeying with Jesus: Personal Reflections on the Stations of the Cross and Resurrection

These remarkable reflections on the Stations of the Cross and Resurrection are inspired by the personal experiecne of the authors: Margaret Mizen, whose son Jimmy was murdered in an unprovoked attack in a baker's shop in South London in 2008, identifies with Jesus' mother Mary at the foot of the Cross; physicist Russell Stannard reflects on space in the Empty Tomb; Kelly Connor, who at the age of 17 ran over and killed an innocent victim, writes about the need to be forgiven. Other contributors include Ann Widdecombe, Archbishop John Sentamu, Archbishop Vincent Nichols, Peter Hitchens, Fr Timothy Radcliffe, Peter Stanford, Ruth Burrows, Anne Maguire (of the wrongfully convicted Maguire Seven) and Sister Wendy Beckett. Edited by Dr Lucy Russell who taught at Goldsmiths College, University of London, until the birth of her first child in 2006. She is a regular contributor to the Church Press.

Home by another way: Biblical meditations through the Christian year

    , ,
Written by one of the world's greatest preachers, these insightful meditations began their life as beautifully crafted sermons that explore the meanings of the major seasons and holy days of the Christian year. Reviewer Lucy Winkett, Rector of St James's Picadilly, writes: "This is a deeply compassionate book that takes seriously what it's like to live in the world now, while holding out the scriptural hope of a life not yet imagined. Barbara Brown Taylor tells new parables that reveal meaning in everyday holiness, and the thoroughly human states of confusion, suffering and joy of which she is keenly aware. This book is for all who want to believe but can't quite get there, or for those whose jaded spirit needs a long cool drink at a freshwater spring. Reading these reflections is like being drenched in grace." Recently voted one of the world's top ten contemporary spiritual sages, Barbara Brown Taylor is Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. Her previous books include An Altar in the World and Leaving Church.

Jesus Christ – the alpha and the omega

As we pass through the weeks of Lent, our gaze is drawn ineluctably to the Son of God. The crucified Christ fills our gaze as we move closer to Easter, but in order to grasp more fully the scope and significance of his supreme sacrifice, we need to embrace and believe in the whole Christ, Alpha and Omega, rather than focusing only on isolated aspects of his life, such as his teaching or his example - or even his death and resurrection. There are two journeys to make in this book. The first takes us on an extended exploration of the person and work of Jesus Christ, from the word present before the creation to the Messiah reigning in glory at the end of time. The second journey is one of devotion and discipleship through the events of Holy Week, a journey made in the light of the earlier exploration and enriched by all that we have learned as a result.

    The Things He Carried

The narrative of Holy Week is powerful and painful but, because we know how the story ends, it's easy to gloss over the difficult details and stay in the comfort zone of our understanding. Stephen Cotterell brings home, vividly and poignantly, the physical reality of the Passion story. This is a book to stimulate thought, provoke discussion and create space for contemplation. 'In order to understand the cross you need to stand under it...with the imagination and well as the mind...This book aims to help in that process...But however you use it - on your own or with others - I hope you will receive some small appreciation of just how much the cross weighs, and maybe pick it up yourself.' From the Introduction.

    Seize the Day

Dietrich Bonhoeffer's faith-driven resistance to the Nazis during World War II resulted in his execution. Multitudes have been inspired by the hauntingly powrful words of this man who was willing to die for his convictions. In this collection of 365 meditations Dr Charles Ringma allows us to experience the power of Bonhoeffer's words in a way that challenges us to live out our discipleship daily - combining personal spirituality with an active concern for those around us. These daily meditations on Bonhoeffer's writings may make you uncomfortable. But if you are willing to wrestle - as Bonhoeffer did - with what it means to be a follower of Christ, you'll be empowered to seize each day.

Advent and Christmas wisdom from GK Chesterton

    ,
Advent and Christmas Wisdom from GK Chesterton is like an invitation to laugh and think from a friend and mentor. To quote the author: 'People are losing the power to enjoy Christmas through identifying it with enjoyment. When once they lose sight of the old suggestion that it is all about something, they naturally fall into blank pauses of wondering what it is all about. To be told to rejoice on Christmas Day is reasonable and intelligible, if you understand the name, or even look at the word. To be told to rejoice on the twenty-fifth of December is like being told to rejoice at quarter-past eleven on Thursday week. You cannot suddenly be frivolous unless you believe there is a serious reason for being frivolous.'

Advent and Christmas Wisdom with Thomas Merton

    ,
Advent and Christmas are special times for all Christians. The spiritual longing of the Advent season can only be satisfied by the joy and celebration of a Christmas focused on Jesus' birth in our hearts. Advent and Christmas Wisdom with Thomas Merton give readers the opportunity to experience Advent and Christmas in a way that unwraps the spiritual joy, allowing it to shine brighter that all the tinsel and trappings that can blind our eyes to the deeper meaning of the season. This book is arranged for use on every day of the Advent and Christmas seasons. Each day's reflection begins with a scriptural quotation, continues with a thought from the writings of Thomas Merton, and concludes with a prayer for the day. Merton's writing capture the familiar themes of the season: the Incarnation, anticipation, angels, giving, and many others - each drawing us closer to the joy of welcoming the Saviour into our lives. An appendix includes a suggested plan for using each day's meditation as part of a morning or evening prayer.

    The Jesse Tree Pack

    , , , ,
Create Your own Jesse Tree at home this Advent with this delightful and richly rewarding resource for individuals, families and churches. Originally published in Celtic Daily Readings (now out of print), this month of readings is presented as an A5 booklet beautifully illustrated with newly commissioned drawings by Francesca Ross, and accompanied by a set of 31 double-sided card ornaments, featuring Francesca’s illustrations, for you to colour, cut out and use at home on your own Jesse Tree. The Jesse Tree readings are named after the depictions in stained glass or wood that have been used over many centuries to bring to life the characters who are part of Jesus’ family tree from Jesse through David to Joseph and Mary. In many homes and churches it has become an Advent custom to use a small tree branch as a Jesse Tree and hang it with pictures or ornaments representing the people, prophecies and stories which anticipated the coming of Christ. Some churches have a special Jesse Tree service, during which the whole series of stories is recalled, and the ornaments added, one by one. At home it is probably more beneficial to take one reading, with its accompanying Scriptures, per day, adding the ornaments as you go through the month so that, rather like the pictures in an Advent calendar, more and more appear as Christmas approaches. Some of the drawings and readings remind us of the people who make up Jesus’ family tree. Some instead are rich in prophetic significance, or mark the feasts of Stephen, the ‘holy innocents’ and John the beloved. They remind us of the covenant that Jesus, the promised Messiah, invites us all to enter into with Him. The Jesse Tree can become a much-loved focal point during December that can offset and pre-empt the onset of an increasingly commercial and secularised Christmas. We hope these readings and ornaments will help you to share in this age-old practice and, by providing a focus for prayer and memory and a spur to the imagination, enrich your Advent as they take you on a journey through image and Scripture.
