    The Words Between Us

Robin Windsor has spent most of her life under an assumed name, running from her family's ignominious past. She thought she'd finally found sanctuary in her rather unremarkable used bookstore just up the street from the marina in River City, Michigan. But the store is struggling and the past is hot on her heels. When she receives an eerily familiar book in the mail on the morning of her father's scheduled execution, Robin is thrown back to the long-lost summer she met Peter Flynt, the perfect boy who ruined everything. That book--a first edition Catcher in the Rye--is soon followed by the other books she shared with Peter nearly twenty years ago, with one arriving in the mail each day. But why would Peter be making contact after all these years? And why does she have a sinking feeling that she's about to be exposed all over again? With evocative prose that recalls the classic novels we love, Erin Bartels pens a story that shows that words--the ones we say, the ones we read, and the ones we write--have more power than we imagine.

Sing For Joy: A6 greetings card

    ,

Let the heavens be glad, Let the earth rejoice Let the land exult - and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.

    Bible Passages:

Psalm 96: 11-12 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Luke 19:37-40 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’, ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’ ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’

    Background:

We are completely dependent on our environment, created, like us, from dust. Saying that the trees will sing or the stones cry out is not to give them some fantastical sentience but to remind us that the miracle of their existence reflects God’s glory, power and creativity, and we do the same.

    Printing and Sizing:

This item is 105mm x 148mm and is printed on 300gsm gloss card stock. Each card is blank inside, has its title and copyright details on the back and is individually wrapped in cellophane with an envelope.

Nothing Can Separate: A6 greetings card

    ,

    Words:

I believe that there is nothing in death or life that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the realms of the unseen that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the world as it is or shall be that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the natural forces of the universe that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing above or below that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in all creation that can separate us from the love of God, Which is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Background:

Based on the passage in Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Look out for hands reaching from above and below, the timeline from creation to the future, the strand of DNA… all reinforced with the hands spread in supplication and awe at the amazing declaration.

Never Thirst Again: A6 greetings card

    ,

John 4:13-14 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” © NIV 1984

Background: This could be used as a blessing for a Baptism, Confirmation or Ordination. This passage in John holds a powerful message of hope for a world which thirsts for that elusive ‘something’. Whether that ‘something’ is spiritual meaning, true love, happiness, security or day to day needs, God, in the man Jesus, promised that if we allow the Spirit of God into our lives then not only will our needs be met one way or another (since our idea of how to improve matters may not be God’s ways), but we will live forever with Him.

Let Our Voices: A6 greetings card

    ,

Words: Let Our Voices Rise Like Incense.

    Biblical Passages:

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders, I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth; and he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Revelation 5:6-8)

I will call upon thee, O Lord; make haste to me! Give ear to my voice, when I call to thee! Let my prayer be counted as incense before thee, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice! (Psalm 141:1,2)

    ,

Let the favour of the Lord our God rest upon us.

Establish the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:17)

    Background:

We have sung and said a version of this passage for many years since its inclusion in the Northumbria Community’s Celtic Daily Prayer book ‘Midday Prayer.’ We see the work of our hands through Lindisfarne Scriptorium as a ministry of providing resources to help people spread the Christian message and to support each other. We hope that through their artwork and writings, people are blessed and encounter a deeper relationship with God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

    Wild Goose: A6 greetings card

    ,

In modern Celtic tradition the Holy Spirit is represented as a bird, but not the peaceful and serene dove landing on Jesus at his baptism.

The Wild Goose tells a different side of the Holy Spirit. To begin with, wild geese aren’t controllable, you can’t restrain a wild goose and bend it to your will. They’re raucous and loud, unlike the sweet and calming cooing of a dove, a goose’s call is strong, challenging, strident and unnerving - and just a bit scary.

In much the same way the Spirit of God can be demanding and unsettling and at times even a little scary.

Spirit of God: A6 greetings card

    ,

When Jesus was baptised the Holy Spirit appeared as a dove according to Luke 3:22 and as fire in Acts 2:1-6.

“And the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” NIV Luke 3:22

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. NIV Acts 2:1-6

    Lux Aeterna: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: None Background: This is based on an album called Lux Aeterna by David Fitzgerald. Mary drew together elements from David’s inspirations with themes from some of the tracks, such as ‘Christchild’, ‘Golgotha’ and ‘Resurrection’. The Trinity is expressed in the embracing figure of God the Father behind the cross, the dove of the Spirit and the representations of Jesus as a babe in the womb and ascending to His Father.

Love The Lord: A6 greetings card

    ,

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5 New International Version (NIV)

To love God with all that we are, with our whole self, is an enormous challenge. Our hearts and minds are easily distracted and persuaded; our souls are unfathomable, perhaps our greatest and most faithful lover of God. But to give all, consciously and subconsciously takes a continual recommitment to God's will, a constant re-examining of our relationship with our Creator and, scariest of all, a constant vulnerability to allow God to work in us.

My Sour-Sweet Days : George Herbert’s Poems Through Lent

    , , , ,
George Herbert is one of the great 17th century poet-priests. His poems embrace every shade of the spiritual life, from love and closeness, to anger and despair, to reconciliation and hope. And his work is always rich with audacious playfulness: he seems to take God on, knowing God will win, as if he's having an argument with a faithful friend he knows is not going to leave. In much of theology and spirituality, God is a critical spectator to human lives, but for Herbert, his sense of relationship with God is primarily of a friendship that can never be broken. These are some of the themes Mark Oakley explores in this outstanding book. He offers a poem for every day in Lent, with a 2-page commentary on each of the 40 included.

Liturgy of the Ordinary : Sacred Practices in Everyday Life

    , , , ,
In the overlooked moments and routines of our day, we can become aware of God's presence in surprising ways. How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred? Framed around one ordinary day, this book explores daily life through the lens of liturgy, small practices, and habits that form us. Each chapter looks at something--making the bed, brushing her teeth, losing her keys--that the author does every day. Drawing from the diversity of her life as a campus minister, Anglican priest, friend, wife, and mother, Tish Harrison Warren opens up a practical theology of the everyday. Each activity is related to a spiritual practice as well as an aspect of our Sunday worship. Come and discover the holiness of your every day.

The Splash of Words : Believing in poetry

Whether you love poetry or haven't read it since school, The Splash of Words will help you rediscover poetry's power to startle, challenge and reframe your vision. Like throwing a pebble into water, a poem causes a `splash of words' whose ripples can transform the way we see the world, ourselves and God. Through thirty selected poems, from the fourteenth century to the present day, Mark Oakley explores poetry's power to stir our settled ways of viewing the world and faith, shift our perceptions and even transform who we are.

Love Set You Going: Poems of the Heart

`Love set you going'. The opening words of Sylvia Plath's poem for her newborn daughter are true of each one of us. Love is fundamental to our being, our growth, our development and our happiness. Love enables us to make meaning of our lives in the world, and it gives us hope for what lies beyond. It is completely humdrum and ordinary - yet mysterious beyond words. Beginning in the body, it points us to eternity. Life offers, and asks of us, many different kinds of love, and poets have reflected on this truth with insight and acute observation. As Janet Morley explores love `up and down the generations', `grown up love' and love between `God and the human heart', she reveals what our hearts eventually discern - love has its seasons and ambiguities, its certainties and passions. Love is never simple at all.

Reforesting Faith : What Trees Teach Us About the Nature of God and His Love for Us

    ,
The Bible talks about trees more than any living creation other than people. Perhaps you've missed the forest...and the trees. In this groundbreaking walk through Scripture, former physician and carpenter Dr. Matthew Sleeth makes the convincing case why trees are essential to every Christian's understanding of God. Yet we've mostly missed how God has chosen to tell His story--and ours--through the lens of trees. There's a tree on the first page of Genesis and the last page of Revelation. The Bible refers to its wisdom as a Tree of Life (Proverbs 3:18). Every major Biblical character has a tree associated with them. Jesus himself says he is the true vine (John 15:1). A tree was used to kill Jesus--and a tree is the only thing the Messiah ever harmed. This is no accident. When we subtract trees from Scripture, we miss lessons of faith necessary for our growth. This is the rare book that connects those who love the Creator with creation, and those who love creation with the Creator. It offers inspirational yet practical ways to express our love for God--and our neighbors--by planting spiritual trees and physical trees in the world. Join Dr. Sleeth as he navigates the Bible's trail of trees to explore the wonders of life, death, and rebirth. You'll be amazed at how science is just beginning to catch up to the truths described in Scripture thousands of years ago. Once you discover the hidden language of trees, your walk through the woods--and through Scripture--will never be the same.

To You This Day: A4 signed print

    ,
My God I give to You this day, Each word I think and say and pray, Each action and each small step, on the way. I give my life to You this day. Background: The prayer in this piece, inspired by an old children's prayer, could be used every day but the thinking behind it is as a prayer to say on each day of Lent. The time before Easter is a chance to prepare for the revelation of new Life. We may take time to consider that victory of life over death, what it means to truly die to self and what difference it makes to the everyday activity of living here in the world. The blossom flowers, growing from what appears to be the dead branches of a desolate tree, neatly symbolise life persisting in the face of death as we are reminded every Spring when the seemingly barren begins to live again. These and Other Things: A4 signed print

    ,
He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (John 21:6 NIV) Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. (John 21:25 NIV) Background: This passage has for many years been significant to us as a family and to the Scriptorium as a business and we have used an image of it as our logo for many years. To me this story of Jesus after the resurrection speaks of trust and faith. There must have been something about the voice of the stranger who shouted from the shore, the disciples couldn’t tell it was Jesus and they weren’t expecting to hear His voice but the tone of His voice perhaps held a strangely familiar authority and conviction. The disciples had experienced a dark, unproductive night - Jesus told them, at the point they were probably thinking of giving up, to try fishing again in a different place. Our lives often experience unproductive 'dark nights', times when nothing seems to be going right. Our resources, often both physical and emotional, are on empty and we can’t see our way towards fruitfulness and restoration. The message of the 'casting nets' is to trust God's guidance, to keep trying (perhaps push at new doors, try new ways) and to have faith that however dark and however long, each night will end in a new day. More Than Many Sparrows: A4 signed print

    ,
So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:31 (NIV) Background: The song ‘More Than Many Sparrows’ [http://www.andyseveryn.com/video] was written by Andy Severyn who was a leader of the 'Cross Purposes' School Mission Team of the Sion Catholic Community. I owned a much loved tape that included the song after meeting another member of the Schools Team when performing Christian Theatre and Dance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and played it to stretching point! As some songs do, it remained a favourite that I returned to year after year and it was a pleasure to use it as inspiration for my work. Holy Island is blessed to be home to more than its fair share of sparrows too and they are a daily reminder of how much God loves and values each one of us. More Than Many Sparrows (used in the piece and reprinted here with permission) I know a boy who once believed That he was not worth much at all If he passed exams or scored a goal He would win some brief applause Then back again to try again To get some more attention Look at me, can’t you see I just want to be known Those words were mine, but since those days Someone showed me what I’m worth Just the same as any man Or any woman on this earth He died for me to set me free From thinking that I’m not loveable He died for you to say to you “This is what you’re worth…” More than many sparrows More than brightest gold You’re worth more than people tell you So much more than people know Someone put a price on you He said, “You’re worth dying for” Yes, you’re precious in the eyes of the Lord So there’s no need to be afraid That we don’t deserve his love Good or bad, great or small It’s a free gift from above So let him in, let him bring The truth your heart is waiting for Jesus lives, Jesus gives The value of your heart © 1990 A. Dreaming of Stones : Poems

    , ,
The poems in Dreaming of Stones are about what endures: hope and desire, changing seasons, wild places, love, and the wisdom of mystics. Inspired by the poet's time living in Ireland these readings invite you into deeper ways of seeing the world. They have an incantational quality. Drawing on her commitment as a Benedictine oblate, the poems arise out of a practice of sitting in silence and lectio divina, in which life becomes the holy text. No stranger to poetry, Paintner's bestselling spirituality titles have often included poems. In this first exclusively poetic collection, she writes with a contemplative heart about kinship with nature, ancestral connections, intimacy, the landscape, the unfolding nature of time, and Christian mystics.

Pilgrim, You Find the Path by Walking : Poems

    , , ,
Sonnets are familiar to us, but not relevant. What do they have to do with our fast-paced, tech-driven, ever-shrinking contemporary world? But what if the sonnet-invented 700 years ago-could come back like a cat with nine lives? A sonnet in the twenty-first century might serve as a sacramental form, calling us from our work-mad lives to quietness and reflection. In Pilgrim, You Find the Path by Walking, Jeanne Murray Walker invites the reader to join her on a journey told in 58 colloquial sonnets, beginning in the slangy streets of New York and ending in the holiness of silence and praise. Stops on the journey include reflections on death and grief, but also praise for a migrating butterfly, a knock on the door, the astonishing ocean. This book is designed to be used as a devotional and read slowly; to be both a book of poetry and a spiritual companion.

In Every Corner Sing: a ‘Poet’s Corner’ collection

    ,
Succeeding Ronald Blythe's Word From Wormingford, one of the most beloved columns in contemporary journalism, was always going to be a formidable challenge for any writer. Yet the new occupier of the back page slot of the Church Times, the priest-poet Malcolm Guite, immediately gained the affections and loyalty of a discerning audience accustomed to literary excellence. His lucid, perceptive and imaginative musings follow a similar pattern to the sonnets for which he is so renowned. In his own words, he treats these 500 word essays 'a little in the spirit of the sonnet, with a sense of development, of a 'turn' part way through, and a sense that the end ‘re-visits and re-reads the opening'. These draw together everyday events and encounters, landscape, journeys, poetry, stories, memory and a sense of the sacred, and fuses them to create richly satisfying portraits of the familiar that at the same time opens a doorway in to a new and enchanted world.

    Drysalter

Winner of the 2013 Forward Poetry Prize for Best Collection; Winner of the 2013 Costa Poetry Award; Shortlisted for the 2013 T. S. Eliot Poetry Prize; Shortlisted for the 2015 Portico Prize; Michael Symmons Roberts' sixth - and most ambitious collection to date - takes its name from the ancient trade in powders, chemicals, salts and dyes, paints and cures. These poems offer a similarly potent and sensory multiplicity, unified through the formal constraint of 150 poems of 15 lines. Like the medieval psalters echoed in its title, this collection contains both the sacred and profane. Here are hymns of praise and lamentation, songs of wonder and despair, journeying effortlessly through physical and metaphysical landscapes, from financial markets and urban sprawl to deserts and dark nights of the soul. This collection is a compelling, powerful search for meaning, truth and falsehood. But, as ever in Roberts' work, this search is rooted in the tangible world, leavened by wit, contradiction, tenderness and sensuality. This is Roberts' most expansive writing yet: mystical, philosophical, earthy and elegiac. Drysalter sings of the world's unceasing ability to surprise, and the shock and dislocation of catching your own life unawares.

The Red Tent: the oldest love story never told

Anita Diamant's The Red Tent is an extraordinary and engrossing tale of ancient womanhood and family honour. In the Bible, Dinah's fate is merely hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the Book of Genesis that recounts the life of Jacob and his twelve sons. Told in Dinah's voice, the tale begins with the story of her mothers - the four wives of Jacob - each of whom embodies unique feminine traits, and concludes with Dinah's own startling and unforgettable story of betrayal, grief and love. Deeply affecting and intimate, The Red Tent combines outstandingly rich storytelling with an original insight into women's society in a fascinating period of early history. 'I genuinely fell into this rich and colourful world and Dinah and Leah have stayed with me as ancestors and sisters brought to life by Anita Diamant's imaginative novel' - Maureen Lipman.

    The Book of Trees

    ,

"In the opening lines of “Willow,” a poem in Sean M. Conrey’s latest, The Book of Trees, Saint Columba imagines Christ in a rainless desert, a landscape he knows only through books. The poem ends with a vignette about a monk who perches on Columba’s shoulders to repair a thatched roof in the midst of a downpour—“I’ll admit, it’s a constant struggle to love/the mud on my shoulders where he stood.” With the cadence of prayer, Conrey’s poems conjure the wisdom of a land that hasn’t “forgot to speak for itself” at the very moment when that wisdom begins to be forgotten. A briny and true collection."

Timeless Beauty: in the arts and everyday life

    , , ,
Once people were instinctively tuned to the beautiful. In those distant days before the advent of the motor car and the washing machine, the electric toothbrush and the wheel, craftsmen and musicians, masons and poets, painters and dancers simply did not know how to make an ugly thing; they could not close their hearts to the light of heaven. For them countless numbers of them beauty was as necessary as the air they breathed. It gave dignity and meaning to drab and impoverished lives, and inspired great (but often brutal) civilizations in which people lived creative and useful lives. Beauty is the nourishment of the soul. It is something that gives us dignity as a species. John Lane calls us to awaken to the possibilities of a culture that recognizes the importance of beauty, and to acknowledge that we are only fully human in contact with the beautiful.

Others are more carefully crafted and have the capacity to deepen our vision and sharpen our sense of what life is truly about. Spirituality in Photography explores how photography can offer unique perspectives on the self, the world and what we live by. Readers are invited to take photos more slowly, reframe their gaze, allow themselves to be fully present, and let their photos tell a story - this includes a section on how photography can offer new perspectives on the Bible. The book also explores how photography can help readers meditate on mystery and tune into their own `rule of life'. Spirituality in Photography offers a range of ideas for readers to try out with their camera or camera phone and invites them on a journey of discovery, as they allow their photography and their spirituality to inspire each other.

'When words fail' - it is then that signs and symbols, images and sounds, pictures and dreams, have to take over.  This book points the way to deeper knowlege of God through such other media, especially literature and music, art and architecture.

Be stronger than each storm in me A4 print

    , , ,
Lynda Owen-Hussey, a companion with the Northumbria Community, is a mixed media artist living on the shores of the West Coast of Ireland in County Kerry, close to the birthplace of St Brendan. These days, her work is inspired by the many gifts of the sea she encounters on walks along the shore, often pondering the life of St Brendan and the many monks of old who inhabited this land. In describing this original artwork Lynda says:

This artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Christ of the mysteries, can I trust you to be stronger than each storm in me?

We read that Brendan and his companions cried out in prayer as they encountered storms on the ocean, trusting God as they sailed on in search of the land of promise. In Mark 6 we find Jesus’s disciples in a boat straining against the wind and becoming terrified as they see Jesus walking out to them over the water. He calls out to his disciples ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ As he climbs into the boat the wind ceases. We too can cry out to God when we find ourselves in the midst of life’s storms trusting that Jesus is with us always.

Painted whilst on retreat at Nether Springs, the Mother House of the Northumbria Community,  this artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Lord, I will trust You, help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.

Brendan’s journey begins as his heart is stirred by a vision that takes him beyond his present circumstances and surroundings. In Genesis 12 we find Abram, who like Brendan, followed the call of God to leave the familiar comforts of home and venture towards the land of promise. Sometimes we hear that call ourselves, but oftentimes it is discomfort or the unexpected which proves to be the catalyst that opens us afresh to seeking out new ways as we journey in trust.

    Jesus

‘Jesus’ is an illustrated book that tells the story of Christ in simple text given in English, Arabic and Hebrew. The spark of the idea for this book came in Ethiopia when author Joanna Brown stumbled across paintings by contemporary Ethiopian artist, Nebiyu Assefa, who uses the traditional Coptic Church style with a beautiful modern clarity. Each picture visualizes a key moment in the Jesus-story. Joanna has combined these with sepia photographs of her own journeys in the Holy Land that celebrate the warm hospitality, forgiveness and inspiring work for peace that she encountered in those who had also suffered much fear and hardship. As Joanna states in her introduction: The life and teachings of Jesus have boundless depths and if acted on can often turn things upside down. We live with paradox: simplicity interwoven with complexity, weakness with strength, and clarity with mystery … I pray that in the midst of conflict we remember our common humanity, that we have courage to step through fear to love and hope, and that we find joy in our differences. This book has been described by Professor Alastair McIntosh as: A visual theology, by which the light of Christ is brought to bear on present times, and present times shed light on happenings and their human face two thousand years ago. Some of the book illustrations are also available as postcards.

    The Beginning: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2013 Words: In principio erat Verbum et Verbum erat apud Deum et Deus erat Verbum. In the beginning was the Word: and the Word was with God: and the Word was God. Background: The illuminated manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels were made on Lindisfarne by a monk called Eadfrith between 698 and 721. He created it ‘for God and for St Cuthbert’. The book contains the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John: the four Evangelists. The text of the Lindisfarne Gospels is in Latin with a word-by-word translation into Old English added between the lines in the 10th century. It is the oldest surviving translation of the Gospels into the English language. The manuscript itself, for many reasons, resides at the British Library in London but occasionally it returns to the Northeast for a visit. In 2013 Durham was host and as part of the celebrations I created this piece to show how the purpose of the Lindisfarne Gospels, to glorify God and to draw attention to His Word, is continuing today. The illuminated Gospels created on the Island over a thousand years ago continue to be a big inspiration to my work and the Gospel of John became the foundation of the Celtic Christian faith, therefore it was an easy choice to use the beginning of John’s Gospel and the symbolic image of St John as the eagle together with my more meandering style of modern Celtic Knotwork to show the continuation of giving glory to God through art. I have included the word ‘beginning’ to show that the roots of my work lie in the labours of artists who committed their gifting to God, I aim to do the same, ‘For the glory of God alone’.

    Blessed Are: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2015 Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. (John 20:29) Background: To be a Christian is to believe in the seemingly impossible. We don’t have the luxury of being able to actually see and touch and hear the voice of Jesus as the Disciples did, we have to settle for a second hand experience of Jesus, but is that entirely true? Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) sums up how we can experience Jesus today and by doing so see the fruits of the legacy He left. Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. When we willingly behave as Jesus did we meet Him in the people and places, we meet Him in the darkness and the pain and in the joy and the hope of living. It isn’t the same as placing our hand in the crucifixion wounds; or sitting at His feet, listening to His voice and the message He gave; and Jesus knew that His followers would feel that loss. So the last words that he spoke on earth were a blessing specifically for you. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Christ is Risen: A4 signed print

    , ,
Created: 2013 Words: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Background: This piece is a celebration of the Easter message, that Christ is risen. The words are illuminated in Spring colours, with reminders of the season, flowers and birds in flight, intermingled with blood red flowing from the cross where the wounds of Christ would have been. The cross is deliberately empty to remind us of the resurrection and there is a shape around it that echoes a holding cross to remind us that we can ‘hold on’ to His promises. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Help Me Dear Lord: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2010 Words: Help me Dear Lord, to care too much, to love too freely, to pray unceasingly, to forgive endlessly, to laugh fearlessly, to question, to live, to be who I am, to be where I am, to be what I am, to hope, to believe, to reach out my hand. Background: The 'Help Me' poem was written as a response to a piece of art I created called The Name of the Lord and was published in my Life in Christ book. Somehow it needed to become more than just another poem and be allowed to grow into a piece of art in its own right. Much of the artwork around the words takes the form of decoration or illumination and serves as a vehicle for meditating on the words, try following the weaving lines with your finger or eye. The rest of the artwork illustrates the words of the poem with additional ways of thinking about them, so a hand resting on a head with the words 'seventy times seven' represents 'To forgive endlessly' and a blooming colourful flower with the phrase 'water often' is the image for 'To live' - suggesting that we aim for a full, vivid life regularly 'watered' with the presence of God. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Each print is individually signed by Mary Fleeson and is packaged in a cellophane wrapper with a descriptive backing sheet explaining more about the piece and the Scriptorium.

The Lord will watch over you: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2014 Psalm 121 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and for evermore. Background: The words of Psalm 121 are a great comfort to believers even today. To be reassured that the God who created you cares enough about you, as an individual, to keep a protective eye on your daily activities is wonderful. But what about the times when we feel abandoned? The times when we feel like the ground beneath us is crumbling and God is perhaps too busy elsewhere to be concerned about our little life? Those are the times when we need to read those words and see them as more than comfort, they are in fact a promise. Jesus said to His disciples, and therefore to his followers today, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Life may not always be easy, we were never promised that, but we are not expected to live God’s will in our own strength, our ‘help comes from the Lord’ in many diverse ways, sometimes we just have to be willing to accept it.

    Resurrection: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2014 Theme: Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. John 20:1 NIV Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29 Background: This piece is a celebration of life, from the dark empty tomb bright streams and beams of light and colour enter the world, from Jesus death life eternal became a reality. ‘Resurrection’ takes us from the empty tomb to the Ascension. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Sister Wendy’s Bible Treasury: Stories and wisdom through the eyes of great painters

    ,
From the majesty of Genesis to the mystery of Revelation, the Bible contains some of the world's most powerful stories and sublime wisdom. It is also the inspiration for some the greatest pictures ever painted. Adan and Eve expelled from Paradise, Jacob wrestling with the angel, God appearing to Moses in the burning bush, Samson betrayed by Delilah, David slaying Goliath, the beauty of Bathsheba, the wisdom of Solomon: these are among the dramatic episodes and memorable characters from the Old Testament, portrayed here by artists such as Masaccio, Raphael, Rubens, Degas and Rembrandt Then, in the New Testament, the figure of Jesus takes centre stage, with his compelling parables and miracles depicted by artists such as Poussin, Delacroix and van Gogh, and with major events in his ministry – from the nativity to the resurrection – painted by Botticelli, Piero, Duccio, Leonardo, Giotto, Titian and Craigie Aitchison. Commenting on these and many other fine works, Sister Wendy takes you on a journey into the heart of the Bible and of biblical art, making this a book you will want to turn to again and again.

    Places of Pilgrimage

    ,
Places of Pilgrimage records the travels of Ian Scott Massie as he visits Christian sites, areas associated with artists, poets and authors, and many locations with ancient roots and legendary connections Each of the seventy-five spreads in the book features an evocative screen print or watercolour, and an engaging account of the personality of place as perceived by the artist. Some spots, which have already been interpreted by people such as A.E. Housman, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Stanley Spencer, are presented afresh. Some are very personal choices: the landscapes painted by Paul Nash; the village where Laurie Lee wrote Cider with Rosie; the boathouse where Dylan Tomas composed Under Milkwood; and the industrial setting that inspired L.S. Lowry. Some are traditional pilgrimage sires, such as Lindisfarne, Durham and Canterbury; some are places that have other holds over the visitor – the stones of Avebury, the tree where Robin Hood assembled his merry men, the battlefield of Culloden. This exceptional volume offers food for thought, insight and delight; it may awaken in us the kind of passion Ian Scott Massie knows so well, for setting out on pilgrimages of our own.

The Artist’s Rule: nurturing your creative soul with monastic wisdom

    , , , , ,
, nature, solitude, artists, creativity The Artist's Rule: Nurturing Your Creative Soul with Monastic Wisdom by Christine Valters Paintner, author of Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire, invites readers to discover and develop their creative gifts in a spirit of prayer and reflection. This twelve-week course draws on the insights and practices of Benedictine spirituality to explore the interplay between contemplation and creativity. Sumarised in the phrase 'pray and work,' The Rule of St. Benedict provides the inspiration for Christine Valters Paintner's newest exploration of the mutually nourishing relationship between contemplative practices and creative expression. Artists of all stripes and stations in life - poets or painters, potters or photographers - will discover how traditions of Benedictine, Celtic, and desert spirituality can offer new sources of inspiration for their work. Themes like 'Sacred Tools and Sacred Space', 'Creative Solitude and Community,' and 'Nature as a Source of Revelation and Inspiration' are enriched by Paintner's perceptive discussion and enhanced by insightful quotations from well-known artists and writers. Ideally formatted for faith sharing groups and parish retreats, this guide offers suggestions for grounding both the creative and the spiritual life through three basic practices: walking, lectio divina, and journaling. The Artist's Rule is supplemented with online resources, including guided meditation podcasts, video lessons, and discussions.

Eyes of the Heart; photography as Christian contemplative practice

    ,
Eyes of the Heart by Christine Valters Paintner explores photography as a spiritual practice from a Christian perspective. Christine builds on the process of contemplative creativity in her book The Artist’s Rule (also available from the community bookshop) by adapting the monastic practice of lectio divina (sacred reading) into a form of visio divina (sacred seeing). A spiritual director and Benedictine oblate, she guides readers through a new way of spiritual observation – through the lens of a camera – and in receiving images, not simply taking them. She writes that, ‘My hope is that, in exploring the language of photography, you [develop] new portals into the your own experience and awareness of God. Shadow and light, framing, colour, reflections, and mirrors all offer us metaphors for ways of understanding how we might move towards seeing ourselves and God with the eyes of the heart.’ She invites us to use our cameras to help us to release our expectations of what we think we ought to see and learn to discover what is actually there. And then helps us to bring this kind of interaction into our everyday lives.

    The Love Is Activity Book

This little book contains meditations, prayers and activities about Love, inspired by the verses in the book of Corinthians. In Paul's first letter to the Christians of Corinth in Greece, he spends a long time instructing, advising, challenging and encouraging the young church there. He hasn't visited for a few years and he knows of the immorality in the wealthy pagan city and the divisions that have emerged within the church. Although he aims not to diminish the message of the cross with 'wisdom and eloquence', he gave us, in chapter thirteen, some of the most powerful and well-known verses of the New Testament.

For nearly 20 years Mark Riley, a Californian by birth, has come to appreciate and embrace the life, culture and sounds of the Hawaiian nation. In order to honour the people and respect the friends and place he now calls home, this recording has involved cultural expressions, natural soundscapes and Hawaiian musicians to help tell Mark's unfolding story of journeying with God on the island of Kauai as well as internationally. The melding of modern music and indigenous Hawaiian instruments on this project is a symbol of different people groups coming together in unity and exploring their God-given heritage and unique musical gifts. Mark's passion to mesh song with prayer and my heart 'to ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it,' (Jer. 6:16) has been a catalyst for this musical expression of worship.   We are so thankful to those who have shared their stories and given us some understanding of Hawaiian culture and protocol. In our exploration and relationships we have seen God through each other's eyes, learning more of the mysteries of God and tocuhing a little bit of heaven on earth.'   Martin Neil.   All proceeds directly support outreach and ministries of MMI-KAUAI

    Life Journey

This is the first book by talented artist Mary Fleeson, a Community Companion who lives on Holy Island (see Life in Christ for her second). Mary invites you to accompany her on a journey, 'to share a quiet walk, some thoughtful moments and a few challenges...This is not a book of answers. I only hope to share with you a little of what I have discovered since becoming a Christian and encourage you to ask questions of yourself, of others and of God.' Dr Michelle Brown, Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts (including the Lindisfarne Gospels) at the British Library, in her foreword to this book, comments how Mary has reflected, in her vibrant organic images, scribal work and words, the prayer lives of the Celtic Saints who first brought the Gospel to Lindisfarne; the labour that has been a perpetual feature of life on the island through the centuries; and the beauty of the artwork in the Lindisfarne Gospels. This is a wonderful gift book.
