Be stronger than each storm in me A4 print

    , , ,
Lynda Owen-Hussey, a companion with the Northumbria Community, is a mixed media artist living on the shores of the West Coast of Ireland in County Kerry, close to the birthplace of St Brendan. These days, her work is inspired by the many gifts of the sea she encounters on walks along the shore, often pondering the life of St Brendan and the many monks of old who inhabited this land. In describing this original artwork Lynda says:

This artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Christ of the mysteries, can I trust you to be stronger than each storm in me?

We read that Brendan and his companions cried out in prayer as they encountered storms on the ocean, trusting God as they sailed on in search of the land of promise. In Mark 6 we find Jesus’s disciples in a boat straining against the wind and becoming terrified as they see Jesus walking out to them over the water. He calls out to his disciples ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ As he climbs into the boat the wind ceases. We too can cry out to God when we find ourselves in the midst of life’s storms trusting that Jesus is with us always.

    Dreaming of Stones : Poems

    , ,
The poems in Dreaming of Stones are about what endures: hope and desire, changing seasons, wild places, love, and the wisdom of mystics. Inspired by the poet's time living in Ireland these readings invite you into deeper ways of seeing the world. They have an incantational quality. Drawing on her commitment as a Benedictine oblate, the poems arise out of a practice of sitting in silence and lectio divina, in which life becomes the holy text. No stranger to poetry, Paintner's bestselling spirituality titles have often included poems. In this first exclusively poetic collection, she writes with a contemplative heart about kinship with nature, ancestral connections, intimacy, the landscape, the unfolding nature of time, and Christian mystics.

    Drysalter

Winner of the 2013 Forward Poetry Prize for Best Collection; Winner of the 2013 Costa Poetry Award; Shortlisted for the 2013 T. S. Eliot Poetry Prize; Shortlisted for the 2015 Portico Prize; Michael Symmons Roberts' sixth - and most ambitious collection to date - takes its name from the ancient trade in powders, chemicals, salts and dyes, paints and cures. These poems offer a similarly potent and sensory multiplicity, unified through the formal constraint of 150 poems of 15 lines. Like the medieval psalters echoed in its title, this collection contains both the sacred and profane. Here are hymns of praise and lamentation, songs of wonder and despair, journeying effortlessly through physical and metaphysical landscapes, from financial markets and urban sprawl to deserts and dark nights of the soul. This collection is a compelling, powerful search for meaning, truth and falsehood. But, as ever in Roberts' work, this search is rooted in the tangible world, leavened by wit, contradiction, tenderness and sensuality. This is Roberts' most expansive writing yet: mystical, philosophical, earthy and elegiac. Drysalter sings of the world's unceasing ability to surprise, and the shock and dislocation of catching your own life unawares.

Help me to journey beyond the familiar 210mm square print

    , , ,
Lynda Owen-Hussey, a companion with the Northumbria Community, is a mixed media artist living on the shores of the West Coast of Ireland in County Kerry, close to the birthplace of St Brendan. These days, her work is inspired by the many gifts of the sea she encounters on walks along the shore, often pondering the life of St Brendan and the many monks of old who inhabited this land. In describing this original artwork Lynda says:

Painted whilst on retreat at Nether Springs, the Mother House of the Northumbria Community,  this artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Lord, I will trust You, help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.

Brendan’s journey begins as his heart is stirred by a vision that takes him beyond his present circumstances and surroundings. In Genesis 12 we find Abram, who like Brendan, followed the call of God to leave the familiar comforts of home and venture towards the land of promise. Sometimes we hear that call ourselves, but oftentimes it is discomfort or the unexpected which proves to be the catalyst that opens us afresh to seeking out new ways as we journey in trust.

In Every Corner Sing: a ‘Poet’s Corner’ collection

    ,
Succeeding Ronald Blythe's Word From Wormingford, one of the most beloved columns in contemporary journalism, was always going to be a formidable challenge for any writer. Yet the new occupier of the back page slot of the Church Times, the priest-poet Malcolm Guite, immediately gained the affections and loyalty of a discerning audience accustomed to literary excellence. His lucid, perceptive and imaginative musings follow a similar pattern to the sonnets for which he is so renowned. In his own words, he treats these 500 word essays 'a little in the spirit of the sonnet, with a sense of development, of a 'turn' part way through, and a sense that the end ‘re-visits and re-reads the opening'. These draw together everyday events and encounters, landscape, journeys, poetry, stories, memory and a sense of the sacred, and fuses them to create richly satisfying portraits of the familiar that at the same time opens a doorway in to a new and enchanted world.

Liturgy of the Ordinary : Sacred Practices in Everyday Life

    , , , ,
In the overlooked moments and routines of our day, we can become aware of God's presence in surprising ways. How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred? Framed around one ordinary day, this book explores daily life through the lens of liturgy, small practices, and habits that form us. Each chapter looks at something--making the bed, brushing her teeth, losing her keys--that the author does every day. Drawing from the diversity of her life as a campus minister, Anglican priest, friend, wife, and mother, Tish Harrison Warren opens up a practical theology of the everyday. Each activity is related to a spiritual practice as well as an aspect of our Sunday worship. Come and discover the holiness of your every day.

Love Set You Going: Poems of the Heart

`Love set you going'. The opening words of Sylvia Plath's poem for her newborn daughter are true of each one of us. Love is fundamental to our being, our growth, our development and our happiness. Love enables us to make meaning of our lives in the world, and it gives us hope for what lies beyond. It is completely humdrum and ordinary - yet mysterious beyond words. Beginning in the body, it points us to eternity. Life offers, and asks of us, many different kinds of love, and poets have reflected on this truth with insight and acute observation. As Janet Morley explores love `up and down the generations', `grown up love' and love between `God and the human heart', she reveals what our hearts eventually discern - love has its seasons and ambiguities, its certainties and passions. Love is never simple at all.

My Sour-Sweet Days : George Herbert’s Poems Through Lent

    , , , ,
George Herbert is one of the great 17th century poet-priests. His poems embrace every shade of the spiritual life, from love and closeness, to anger and despair, to reconciliation and hope. And his work is always rich with audacious playfulness: he seems to take God on, knowing God will win, as if he's having an argument with a faithful friend he knows is not going to leave. In much of theology and spirituality, God is a critical spectator to human lives, but for Herbert, his sense of relationship with God is primarily of a friendship that can never be broken. These are some of the themes Mark Oakley explores in this outstanding book. He offers a poem for every day in Lent, with a 2-page commentary on each of the 40 included.

My times are still in Your hands 210mm square print

Brendan and his companions spent years on the sea as they searched for, and eventually found, the promised land. In Psalm 31, King David in the midst of difficulty places his trust in God recalling that his times are in God’s hands. Likewise we are called to trust God in the dark and difficult desert days we can find ourselves in.

Pilgrim, You Find the Path by Walking : Poems

    , , ,
Sonnets are familiar to us, but not relevant. What do they have to do with our fast-paced, tech-driven, ever-shrinking contemporary world? But what if the sonnet-invented 700 years ago-could come back like a cat with nine lives? A sonnet in the twenty-first century might serve as a sacramental form, calling us from our work-mad lives to quietness and reflection. In Pilgrim, You Find the Path by Walking, Jeanne Murray Walker invites the reader to join her on a journey told in 58 colloquial sonnets, beginning in the slangy streets of New York and ending in the holiness of silence and praise. Stops on the journey include reflections on death and grief, but also praise for a migrating butterfly, a knock on the door, the astonishing ocean. This book is designed to be used as a devotional and read slowly; to be both a book of poetry and a spiritual companion.

Reforesting Faith : What Trees Teach Us About the Nature of God and His Love for Us

    ,
The Bible talks about trees more than any living creation other than people. Perhaps you've missed the forest...and the trees. In this groundbreaking walk through Scripture, former physician and carpenter Dr. Matthew Sleeth makes the convincing case why trees are essential to every Christian's understanding of God. Yet we've mostly missed how God has chosen to tell His story--and ours--through the lens of trees. There's a tree on the first page of Genesis and the last page of Revelation. The Bible refers to its wisdom as a Tree of Life (Proverbs 3:18). Every major Biblical character has a tree associated with them. Jesus himself says he is the true vine (John 15:1). A tree was used to kill Jesus--and a tree is the only thing the Messiah ever harmed. This is no accident. When we subtract trees from Scripture, we miss lessons of faith necessary for our growth. This is the rare book that connects those who love the Creator with creation, and those who love creation with the Creator. It offers inspirational yet practical ways to express our love for God--and our neighbors--by planting spiritual trees and physical trees in the world. Join Dr. Sleeth as he navigates the Bible's trail of trees to explore the wonders of life, death, and rebirth. You'll be amazed at how science is just beginning to catch up to the truths described in Scripture thousands of years ago. Once you discover the hidden language of trees, your walk through the woods--and through Scripture--will never be the same.

Spirituality in Photography: taking pictures with deeper vision

Millions of photos are taken every day across the world. Some are just snapshots. Others are more carefully crafted and have the capacity to deepen our vision and sharpen our sense of what life is truly about. Spirituality in Photography explores how photography can offer unique perspectives on the self, the world and what we live by. Readers are invited to take photos more slowly, reframe their gaze, allow themselves to be fully present, and let their photos tell a story - this includes a section on how photography can offer new perspectives on the Bible. The book also explores how photography can help readers meditate on mystery and tune into their own `rule of life'. Spirituality in Photography offers a range of ideas for readers to try out with their camera or camera phone and invites them on a journey of discovery, as they allow their photography and their spirituality to inspire each other.

    The Book of Trees

    ,

"In the opening lines of “Willow,” a poem in Sean M. Conrey’s latest, The Book of Trees, Saint Columba imagines Christ in a rainless desert, a landscape he knows only through books. The poem ends with a vignette about a monk who perches on Columba’s shoulders to repair a thatched roof in the midst of a downpour—“I’ll admit, it’s a constant struggle to love/the mud on my shoulders where he stood.” With the cadence of prayer, Conrey’s poems conjure the wisdom of a land that hasn’t “forgot to speak for itself” at the very moment when that wisdom begins to be forgotten. A briny and true collection."

The Red Tent: the oldest love story never told

Anita Diamant's The Red Tent is an extraordinary and engrossing tale of ancient womanhood and family honour. In the Bible, Dinah's fate is merely hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the Book of Genesis that recounts the life of Jacob and his twelve sons. Told in Dinah's voice, the tale begins with the story of her mothers - the four wives of Jacob - each of whom embodies unique feminine traits, and concludes with Dinah's own startling and unforgettable story of betrayal, grief and love. Deeply affecting and intimate, The Red Tent combines outstandingly rich storytelling with an original insight into women's society in a fascinating period of early history. 'I genuinely fell into this rich and colourful world and Dinah and Leah have stayed with me as ancestors and sisters brought to life by Anita Diamant's imaginative novel' - Maureen Lipman.

    The Words Between Us

Robin Windsor has spent most of her life under an assumed name, running from her family's ignominious past. She thought she'd finally found sanctuary in her rather unremarkable used bookstore just up the street from the marina in River City, Michigan. But the store is struggling and the past is hot on her heels. When she receives an eerily familiar book in the mail on the morning of her father's scheduled execution, Robin is thrown back to the long-lost summer she met Peter Flynt, the perfect boy who ruined everything. That book--a first edition Catcher in the Rye--is soon followed by the other books she shared with Peter nearly twenty years ago, with one arriving in the mail each day. But why would Peter be making contact after all these years? And why does she have a sinking feeling that she's about to be exposed all over again? With evocative prose that recalls the classic novels we love, Erin Bartels pens a story that shows that words--the ones we say, the ones we read, and the ones we write--have more power than we imagine.

Timeless Beauty: in the arts and everyday life

    , , ,
Once people were instinctively tuned to the beautiful. In those distant days before the advent of the motor car and the washing machine, the electric toothbrush and the wheel, craftsmen and musicians, masons and poets, painters and dancers simply did not know how to make an ugly thing; they could not close their hearts to the light of heaven. For them countless numbers of them beauty was as necessary as the air they breathed. It gave dignity and meaning to drab and impoverished lives, and inspired great (but often brutal) civilizations in which people lived creative and useful lives. Beauty is the nourishment of the soul. It is something that gives us dignity as a species. John Lane calls us to awaken to the possibilities of a culture that recognizes the importance of beauty, and to acknowledge that we are only fully human in contact with the beautiful.

When Words Fail: God and the World of Beauty

'When words fail' - it is then that signs and symbols, images and sounds, pictures and dreams, have to take over.  This book points the way to deeper knowlege of God through such other media, especially literature and music, art and architecture.

More Than Many Sparrows: A4 signed print

    ,
So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:31 (NIV) Background: The song ‘More Than Many Sparrows’ [http://www.andyseveryn.com/video] was written by Andy Severyn who was a leader of the 'Cross Purposes' School Mission Team of the Sion Catholic Community. I owned a much loved tape that included the song after meeting another member of the Schools Team when performing Christian Theatre and Dance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and played it to stretching point! As some songs do, it remained a favourite that I returned to year after year and it was a pleasure to use it as inspiration for my work. Holy Island is blessed to be home to more than its fair share of sparrows too and they are a daily reminder of how much God loves and values each one of us. More Than Many Sparrows (used in the piece and reprinted here with permission) I know a boy who once believed That he was not worth much at all If he passed exams or scored a goal He would win some brief applause Then back again to try again To get some more attention Look at me, can’t you see I just want to be known Those words were mine, but since those days Someone showed me what I’m worth Just the same as any man Or any woman on this earth He died for me to set me free From thinking that I’m not loveable He died for you to say to you “This is what you’re worth…” More than many sparrows More than brightest gold You’re worth more than people tell you So much more than people know Someone put a price on you He said, “You’re worth dying for” Yes, you’re precious in the eyes of the Lord So there’s no need to be afraid That we don’t deserve his love Good or bad, great or small It’s a free gift from above So let him in, let him bring The truth your heart is waiting for Jesus lives, Jesus gives The value of your heart © 1990 A. Sing For Joy: A4 signed print

    ,
Let the heavens be glad, Let the earth rejoice Let the land exult - and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy. Bible Passages: Psalm 96: 11-12 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Luke 19:37-40 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’, ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’ ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’ Background: We are completely dependent on our environment, created, like us, from dust. Saying that the trees will sing or the stones cry out is not to give them some fantastical sentience but to remind us that the miracle of their existence reflects God’s glory, power and creativity, and we do the same. These and Other Things: A4 signed print

    ,
He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (John 21:6 NIV) Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. (John 21:25 NIV) Background: This passage has for many years been significant to us as a family and to the Scriptorium as a business and we have used an image of it as our logo for many years. To me this story of Jesus after the resurrection speaks of trust and faith. There must have been something about the voice of the stranger who shouted from the shore, the disciples couldn’t tell it was Jesus and they weren’t expecting to hear His voice but the tone of His voice perhaps held a strangely familiar authority and conviction. The disciples had experienced a dark, unproductive night - Jesus told them, at the point they were probably thinking of giving up, to try fishing again in a different place. Our lives often experience unproductive 'dark nights', times when nothing seems to be going right. Our resources, often both physical and emotional, are on empty and we can’t see our way towards fruitfulness and restoration. The message of the 'casting nets' is to trust God's guidance, to keep trying (perhaps push at new doors, try new ways) and to have faith that however dark and however long, each night will end in a new day. "Come and have breakfast!" (John 21:12) Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock

To You This Day: A4 signed print

    ,
My God I give to You this day, Each word I think and say and pray, Each action and each small step, on the way. I give my life to You this day. Background: The prayer in this piece, inspired by an old children's prayer, could be used every day but the thinking behind it is as a prayer to say on each day of Lent. The time before Easter is a chance to prepare for the revelation of new Life. We may take time to consider that victory of life over death, what it means to truly die to self and what difference it makes to the everyday activity of living here in the world. The blossom flowers, growing from what appears to be the dead branches of a desolate tree, neatly symbolise life persisting in the face of death as we are reminded every Spring when the seemingly barren begins to live again. Let Our Voices: A6 greetings card

    ,

Words: Let Our Voices Rise Like Incense.

    Biblical Passages:

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders, I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth; and he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Revelation 5:6-8)

I will call upon thee, O Lord; make haste to me! Give ear to my voice, when I call to thee! Let my prayer be counted as incense before thee, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice! (Psalm 141:1,2)

Love The Lord: A6 greetings card

    ,

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5 New International Version (NIV)

To love God with all that we are, with our whole self, is an enormous challenge. Our hearts and minds are easily distracted and persuaded; our souls are unfathomable, perhaps our greatest and most faithful lover of God. But to give all, consciously and subconsciously takes a continual recommitment to God's will, a constant re-examining of our relationship with our Creator and, scariest of all, a constant vulnerability to allow God to work in us.

Mary drew together elements from David’s inspirations with themes from some of the tracks, such as ‘Christchild’, ‘Golgotha’ and ‘Resurrection’. Never Thirst Again: A6 greetings card

    ,

John 4:13-14 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” © NIV 1984

Background: This could be used as a blessing for a Baptism, Confirmation or Ordination. This passage in John holds a powerful message of hope for a world which thirsts for that elusive ‘something’. Whether that ‘something’ is spiritual meaning, true love, happiness, security or day to day needs, God, in the man Jesus, promised that if we allow the Spirit of God into our lives then not only will our needs be met one way or another (since our idea of how to improve matters may not be God’s ways), but we will live forever with Him.

Nothing Can Separate: A6 greetings card

    ,

    Words:

I believe that there is nothing in death or life that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the realms of the unseen that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the world as it is or shall be that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the natural forces of the universe that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing above or below that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in all creation that can separate us from the love of God, Which is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Background:

Based on the passage in Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Look out for hands reaching from above and below, the timeline from creation to the future, the strand of DNA… all reinforced with the hands spread in supplication and awe at the amazing declaration.

Let the heavens be glad, Let the earth rejoice Let the land exult - and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.

Psalm 96: 11-12 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Spirit of God: A6 greetings card

    ,

When Jesus was baptised the Holy Spirit appeared as a dove according to Luke 3:22 and as fire in Acts 2:1-6.

“And the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” NIV Luke 3:22

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. NIV Acts 2:1-6

    Wild Goose: A6 greetings card

    ,

In modern Celtic tradition the Holy Spirit is represented as a bird, but not the peaceful and serene dove landing on Jesus at his baptism.

The Wild Goose tells a different side of the Holy Spirit. To begin with, wild geese aren’t controllable, you can’t restrain a wild goose and bend it to your will. They’re raucous and loud, unlike the sweet and calming cooing of a dove, a goose’s call is strong, challenging, strident and unnerving - and just a bit scary.

In much the same way the Spirit of God can be demanding and unsettling and at times even a little scary.

    Blessed Are: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2015 Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. (John 20:29) Background: To be a Christian is to believe in the seemingly impossible. We don’t have the luxury of being able to actually see and touch and hear the voice of Jesus as the Disciples did, we have to settle for a second hand experience of Jesus, but is that entirely true? Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) sums up how we can experience Jesus today and by doing so see the fruits of the legacy He left. Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. When we willingly behave as Jesus did we meet Him in the people and places, we meet Him in the darkness and the pain and in the joy and the hope of living. It isn’t the same as placing our hand in the crucifixion wounds; or sitting at His feet, listening to His voice and the message He gave; and Jesus knew that His followers would feel that loss. So the last words that he spoke on earth were a blessing specifically for you. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that...'"Caim" was originally designed as a CD cover for an album of prayers set to music by the same name, therefore the imagery reflects themes of the music included, however as is often the case the illustration evolved into something which speaks beyond the obvious inspiration. The hand seems to reach out in a loving, gentle gesture to caress the face of the Creator, symbolised by the star (Revelation 22:16 ‘I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.’). The complex knotwork intersperses three overlapping circles which represent the Trinity and the patterns and colours are life patterns, weaving and merging, coloured by experiences, actions and reactions.' Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Carry Me On CD

    , ,
For nearly 20 years Mark Riley, a Californian by birth, has come to appreciate and embrace the life, culture and sounds of the Hawaiian nation. In order to honour the people and respect the friends and place he now calls home, this recording has involved cultural expressions, natural soundscapes and Hawaiian musicians to help tell Mark's unfolding story of journeying with God on the island of Kauai as well as internationally. The melding of modern music and indigenous Hawaiian instruments on this project is a symbol of different people groups coming together in unity and exploring their God-given heritage and unique musical gifts. [playlist images="false" ids="8781,8783,8785,8787,8791,8793,8795,8797,8799,8801,8803,8805"]   As friends, Mark and I have spent time in each other's community, learning from each other, sharing life's experiences and dreaming dreams. Mark's passion to mesh song with prayer and my heart 'to ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it,' (Jer. 6:16) has been a catalyst for this musical expression of worship.   We are so thankful to those who have shared their stories and given us some understanding of Hawaiian culture and protocol. In our exploration and relationships we have seen God through each other's eyes, learning more of the mysteries of God and tocuhing a little bit of heaven on earth.'   Martin Neil.   All proceeds directly support outreach and ministries of MMI-KAUAI

Anna's first solo album includes some of her 'signature' pieces as well as some songs of her own. Some of you will recognise familiar words from the Complines in Celtic Daily Prayer drawn from Carmina Gadelica and other traditional sources. Here they are set to Anna's own music which has emerged over the years of saying and singing these night-time prayers with her children, Joel and Martha. Anna says, 'I hope you will want to play this album often and that it will capture something of the rhythm of the tides, the sounds of the island and also its stillness.'

    Blessings and journeys CD

    , ,
This compilation has been put together by the Lindisfarne Scriptorium in order to introduce the music of three very different sources to a wider market. The band Iona, with its unique sounds mining the rich seams of our Celtic Christian heritage, is represented by Revelation, Here I stand, Columcille and Edge of the World. The singer and composer Jeff Johnson, with his inspirational vocals producing soundscapes of wonder and beauty, is represented by Benediction, Psalmus Theme, Bless the Lord, Navigatio and A Door into Heaven. The Northumbria Community's music is represented by One Thing I Have Asked (from Morning Prayer), I Bind unto Myself This Day (from Waymarks), May the Peace of the Lord Christ (from Morning Prayer), Haven Song (from Waymarks) and My Prayer for You (from Songs of Blessing). Though the musical style of each is very distinctive, these musicians all share a common desire to journey seeking God's mercy and blessing; and in turn to be a blessing to others - especially through their music. Enjoy this thoughtful collection of tracks as a spur to meditation and prayer - or just for the sheer enjoyment of the music. (And may it also prove a spur to the purchase of the albums represented here!) [playlist images="false" ids="8808,8810,8812,8814,8816,8818,8719,8822,8824,8904,8906,8908,8910,8912"]

Christ and the Chocolaterie: A Lent course

    ,
Christ and the Chocolaterie is an original, innovative and lively Lent course inspired by the film Chocolat, which was in turn based on the best selling novel by Joanne Harris. Using the film as a starting point for exploring issues about God, the world and what it means to be human, Hilary Brand has designed five group sessions on the themes of: ● Giving up – the prelude to change ● Giving out – the power of a gift ● Getting wise – the possibility of change ● Getting real – the power of acceptance ● Growing up  – the process of change Each session includes extracts from the film, group discussion, questions, exercises and meditations, suggestions for individual reading and related Bible passages for further daily reading plus notes for group course leaders. Christ and the Chocolaterie also includes appendices on the curious history of chocolate, the unfair economics of chocolate and ideas for a chocolate feast.

Christ Centred Living: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: None Background: Mary tells us that...'This piece was the result of meditating on what defines a Christ centred life . I wanted to show the fruitfulness that comes from a life rooted in the cross of Christ and the refreshment and cleansing available to us. In the spirals I wanted to express the vibrancy of a Christ-centred life and four aspects of life; birth, death, spirituality and growth. Each arm of the spiral, each aspect of life, is cross hatched and bumpy with patches of light and dark, showing the erratic nature of living. Each arm ends but its outline turns back towards the cross, showing that everything came from God and returns to God.' Christ in the Wilderness: Reflecting on the Paintings by Stanley Spencer

    , ,
The remarkable English painter Stanley Spencer produced a series of works entitled Christ in the Wilderness (1939-54), portraying the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness. These beautiful and compelling images give us a startling insight into Jesus' vocation and his own understanding of his ministry. They show his great love for nature and affinity with all creation. Stephen Cottrell reflects on five of the Christ in the Wilderness paintings, and reveals them to be a rich source of spiritual wisdom and nourishment. He invites us to slow down and enter into the stillness of Stanley Spencer's vision. By dwelling in the wilderness of these evocative portraits, Stephen Cottrell encourages us to refine our own discipleship and learn again what it means to follow Christ.

Christ is Risen: A4 signed print

    , ,
Created: 2013 Words: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Background: This piece is a celebration of the Easter message, that Christ is risen. The words are illuminated in Spring colours, with reminders of the season, flowers and birds in flight, intermingled with blood red flowing from the cross where the wounds of Christ would have been. The cross is deliberately empty to remind us of the resurrection and there is a shape around it that echoes a holding cross to remind us that we can ‘hold on’ to His promises. Come to Me: A4 signed print

    ,
Words: Matthew 11:28 (New American Standard Bible ©1995) "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that...'Jesus offers rest to those of us who are burdened with the weights of sin, fear, worry and the absence of purpose. The loads we carry may be hardly noticeable at first but if not released into Gods waiting hand have a habit of becoming heavier until their weight affects our every movement, slowing us spiritually and eventually crippling our effectiveness as the human children of our Heavenly Father. When Jesus spoke the words it was thought that He was addressing the Jews who were burdened and trapped by the complex and numerous laws and traditions but it is an offer which He makes to everyone today. Often the things in our lives that keep us from loving God and each other completely are burdens of our own making and are tightly bound with our human tendency to sin and then to hide from the God who can reveal those sins to us so we end up carrying a burden of guilt and fear. To God our burdens are tiny and light. He wants to relieve us of them. It may take some effort and courage to recognise and release our heavy loads but it is worth it to be able to stand upright and skip onwards (metaphorically speaking) in life without constraint.' Eyes of the Heart; photography as Christian contemplative practice

    ,
Eyes of the Heart by Christine Valters Paintner explores photography as a spiritual practice from a Christian perspective. Christine builds on the process of contemplative creativity in her book The Artist’s Rule (also available from the community bookshop) by adapting the monastic practice of lectio divina (sacred reading) into a form of visio divina (sacred seeing). A spiritual director and Benedictine oblate, she guides readers through a new way of spiritual observation – through the lens of a camera – and in receiving images, not simply taking them. She writes that, ‘My hope is that, in exploring the language of photography, you [develop] new portals into the your own experience and awareness of God. Shadow and light, framing, colour, reflections, and mirrors all offer us metaphors for ways of understanding how we might move towards seeing ourselves and God with the eyes of the heart.’ She invites us to use our cameras to help us to release our expectations of what we think we ought to see and learn to discover what is actually there. And then helps us to bring this kind of interaction into our everyday lives.

The colours and lines of the background are reminiscent of the Aurora Borealis which we saw a few years ago over the Island, the colours were vivid reds & greens with golds, yellows and blues flickering against an inky black sky. We wondered if the record in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle which says, “… immense flashes of lightening, and fiery dragons were seen flying in the air...” referred to a rare but brilliant display of the Aurora in the North East of England. We were amazed at the drama of the fiery sky and could easily imagine a less informed society being attributing its source to dragons!' Help Me Dear Lord: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2010 Words: Help me Dear Lord, to care too much, to love too freely, to pray unceasingly, to forgive endlessly, to laugh fearlessly, to question, to live, to be who I am, to be where I am, to be what I am, to hope, to believe, to reach out my hand. Background: The 'Help Me' poem was written as a response to a piece of art I created called The Name of the Lord and was published in my Life in Christ book. Somehow it needed to become more than just another poem and be allowed to grow into a piece of art in its own right. Much of the artwork around the words takes the form of decoration or illumination and serves as a vehicle for meditating on the words, try following the weaving lines with your finger or eye. The rest of the artwork illustrates the words of the poem with additional ways of thinking about them, so a hand resting on a head with the words 'seventy times seven' represents 'To forgive endlessly' and a blooming colourful flower with the phrase 'water often' is the image for 'To live' - suggesting that we aim for a full, vivid life regularly 'watered' with the presence of God. Jesus

‘Jesus’ is an illustrated book that tells the story of Christ in simple text given in English, Arabic and Hebrew. The spark of the idea for this book came in Ethiopia when author Joanna Brown stumbled across paintings by contemporary Ethiopian artist, Nebiyu Assefa, who uses the traditional Coptic Church style with a beautiful modern clarity. Each picture visualizes a key moment in the Jesus-story. Joanna has combined these with sepia photographs of her own journeys in the Holy Land that celebrate the warm hospitality, forgiveness and inspiring work for peace that she encountered in those who had also suffered much fear and hardship. As Joanna states in her introduction: The life and teachings of Jesus have boundless depths and if acted on can often turn things upside down. We live with paradox: simplicity interwoven with complexity, weakness with strength, and clarity with mystery … I pray that in the midst of conflict we remember our common humanity, that we have courage to step through fear to love and hope, and that we find joy in our differences. This book has been described by Professor Alastair McIntosh as: A visual theology, by which the light of Christ is brought to bear on present times, and present times shed light on happenings and their human face two thousand years ago. Some of the book illustrations are also available as postcards.

    Journey: A4 signed print

    ,
Words: None Background: Artist Mary Fleeson comments...'The design of ‘Journey’ was an experiment inspired by a manuscript at the British Library. The parchment I saw had been painted with a rich purple-red ink and the script was formed using gold ink which appeared coppery in colour. Therefore I formed my cross in a similar way and to achieve the layered textural depth effect I experimented with collage. The working title for the piece was ‘Unknown Journey’, its layers representing C.S Lewis’ view of death as an ‘onward and upward’ journey to a better, brighter, more ‘real’ place.' Life Journey

This is the first book by talented artist Mary Fleeson, a Community Companion who lives on Holy Island (see Life in Christ for her second). Mary invites you to accompany her on a journey, 'to share a quiet walk, some thoughtful moments and a few challenges...This is not a book of answers. I only hope to share with you a little of what I have discovered since becoming a Christian and encourage you to ask questions of yourself, of others and of God.' Dr Michelle Brown, Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts (including the Lindisfarne Gospels) at the British Library, in her foreword to this book, comments how Mary has reflected, in her vibrant organic images, scribal work and words, the prayer lives of the Celtic Saints who first brought the Gospel to Lindisfarne; the labour that has been a perpetual feature of life on the island through the centuries; and the beauty of the artwork in the Lindisfarne Gospels. This is a wonderful gift book.

    Life Journey CD

    ,
David Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge produce an instrumental album based around the artwork, prayers and poems of Mary's Life Journey book. The music on this album was originally commissioned and conceived as an interpretation in sound of the incredibly inspiring imagery and prose contained within Mary Fleeson's wonderful book Life Journey. In that it has undoubtedly succeeded, but has also transcended the original brief as the unique chemistry between the two musicians that co-founded Iona has once again produced a deeply spiritual, timeless work. A completely instrumental album (apart from some choral samples), the two Davids came together and spent several days improvising as they poured over the book and responded to the words and pictures. Over the next year, these improvisations were gradually shaped into complete compositions which follow the chapters of the book. Dave B relates:

In many ways this felt like we were returning to the source of the inspiration that birthed IONA the band. IONA was born out of David and I improvising together during soundchecks on Adrian Snell gigs back at the end of the 1980's and David's mystical experience of God's powerful Presence one dark night on the Island of Lindisfarne. This book was also birthed by Mary on Lindisfarne and much of its imagery is inspired by that amazing place. At certain points during the album you can hear sounds that Mary's husband Mark recorded on the island - the St Mary's church bell, the sea lapping on nearby St Cuthbert's Isle, the sound of the seabirds.

    Love Is: A6 greetings card

    ,
Created: 1999 Words: Love is always patient and kind. Love is not boastful or conceited. It is never rude, and never seeks its own advantage. It does not take offence or store up grievances. Love does not rejoice in wrong doing but finds its joy in the truth. It always ready to make allowances, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. These remain: faith, hope and love, and the greatest is love. Background: Based on 1 Corinthians 13 (v. 4-13). A good exercise is to replace the word 'love' with your own name to see if you match up - not an easy task but one worthy of aspiring to! Magnificat: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: My soul magnifies the Lord My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour Background: Artist Mary Fleeson comments that this design is based on the words attributed to Mary, the mother of Jesus, her praises to God for His blessing and wonder at the great responsibility He has given to her. The figure in ‘Magnificat’ was designed to be deliberately androgenous so that anyone could confidently repeat Mary’s words. The woven strands rising like incense smoke from the vibrantly coloured figure are prayers coming from all parts of the body to symbolise that prayer is an energetic, body, mind and spirit activity. The plant drawn behind the wording grows upwards to represent the fruitfulness of a life steeped in prayer and wholly given to God’s purpose.' Source: "The Lord's Prayer in the Principal Languages, Dialects and Versions of the World, printed in Type and Vernaculars of the Different Nations, compiled and published by G.F. Bergholtz", Chicago, Illinois, 1884. Translation for ‘Our Father’: Our Father in heaven rich, Thy name be blessed I wish, Lead us Lord into thy bliss, Let us never thy riches miss. Let us Lord accept alone That thy will be ever done Also as it is in heaven In earth may it be even, The heaven bread that lasteth today Give us Lord this same day, Forgive us Lord to our bone All that we have here misdone, Also as we wisely forgave While we in this world live All that here us misdo And we beseech thee too, Lead us Lord to our testing And shield us from all evil thing.
