Three monks and a donkey
This month of readings have been written by Sarah Pillar out of her personal journey of discovery and pilgrimage. In researching the town of Evesham where she and her family live, Sarah stumbled upon this story which we’ve affectionately called ‘Three Monks and a Donkey’.
The three monks are Aldwin, Reinfrid and Elfwy. They began their journey in Evesham in the year 1074, travelling North to the ancient Northumbrian sites. Nearly a thousand years ago, in the midst of political and social upheaval, they discover, as many of us have, that the simple, obedient lives of the Northumbrian saints inspire a new way for living for times such as ours.
Threads of God’s story within this story have enriched our Community heritage leading us to celebrate Easter in 2009 as a Community in Evesham. It brings us a hope that in the 21st century, we too might rekindle the light of Christ in our communities, repair broken altars and rebuild foundations of old in our own changing and challenging times.
