Treasures of Darkness

Christian tradition has long recognised that the road of faith is not always well-lit. In our following of Jesus as Lord and Saviour, whether in darkness or in light, God is leading us every step of the Way on our spiritual journey. Sometimes we know it, and feel it, a lot of the time we don’t know and we don’t feel it. Either way, it is the outworking of the Mystery that is God. In both cases, knowing or unknowing, and unique to each one of us, God is leading us every step of the Way.

God has promised that he will only lead us in ‘paths of righteousness’. And with this promise God is putting his own reputation on the line, for as the Psalmist explains, ‘He leads me in paths of righteousness for his Names sake’ (Psalm 23:3) He will never lead us in paths of unrighteousness. He has already told us how we can assist and play our part. It is centred in the discipline of meditation and prayer. It is the outworking of our embracing and believing that “[God’s ] Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path’ (Psalm 119:105) It is the answer to the prayer, ‘Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Saviour, and my hope is in you all day long.’ (Psalm 25;4-5)

As the Good News Bible translates a much-loved and familiar scripture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
