Liturgy of the Ordinary : Sacred Practices in Everyday Life

    , , , ,
In the overlooked moments and routines of our day, we can become aware of God's presence in surprising ways. How do we embrace the sacred in the ordinary and the ordinary in the sacred? Framed around one ordinary day, this book explores daily life through the lens of liturgy, small practices, and habits that form us. Each chapter looks at something--making the bed, brushing her teeth, losing her keys--that the author does every day. Drawing from the diversity of her life as a campus minister, Anglican priest, friend, wife, and mother, Tish Harrison Warren opens up a practical theology of the everyday. Each activity is related to a spiritual practice as well as an aspect of our Sunday worship. Come and discover the holiness of your every day.

The Splash of Words : Believing in poetry

Whether you love poetry or haven't read it since school, The Splash of Words will help you rediscover poetry's power to startle, challenge and reframe your vision. Like throwing a pebble into water, a poem causes a `splash of words' whose ripples can transform the way we see the world, ourselves and God. Through thirty selected poems, from the fourteenth century to the present day, Mark Oakley explores poetry's power to stir our settled ways of viewing the world and faith, shift our perceptions and even transform who we are.

Love Set You Going: Poems of the Heart

`Love set you going'. The opening words of Sylvia Plath's poem for her newborn daughter are true of each one of us. Love is fundamental to our being, our growth, our development and our happiness. Love enables us to make meaning of our lives in the world, and it gives us hope for what lies beyond. It is completely humdrum and ordinary - yet mysterious beyond words. Beginning in the body, it points us to eternity. Life offers, and asks of us, many different kinds of love, and poets have reflected on this truth with insight and acute observation. As Janet Morley explores love `up and down the generations', `grown up love' and love between `God and the human heart', she reveals what our hearts eventually discern - love has its seasons and ambiguities, its certainties and passions. Love is never simple at all.

Reforesting Faith : What Trees Teach Us About the Nature of God and His Love for Us

    ,
The Bible talks about trees more than any living creation other than people. Perhaps you've missed the forest...and the trees. In this groundbreaking walk through Scripture, former physician and carpenter Dr. Matthew Sleeth makes the convincing case why trees are essential to every Christian's understanding of God. Yet we've mostly missed how God has chosen to tell His story--and ours--through the lens of trees. There's a tree on the first page of Genesis and the last page of Revelation. The Bible refers to its wisdom as a Tree of Life (Proverbs 3:18). Every major Biblical character has a tree associated with them. Jesus himself says he is the true vine (John 15:1). A tree was used to kill Jesus--and a tree is the only thing the Messiah ever harmed. This is no accident. When we subtract trees from Scripture, we miss lessons of faith necessary for our growth. This is the rare book that connects those who love the Creator with creation, and those who love creation with the Creator. It offers inspirational yet practical ways to express our love for God--and our neighbors--by planting spiritual trees and physical trees in the world. Join Dr. Sleeth as he navigates the Bible's trail of trees to explore the wonders of life, death, and rebirth. You'll be amazed at how science is just beginning to catch up to the truths described in Scripture thousands of years ago. Once you discover the hidden language of trees, your walk through the woods--and through Scripture--will never be the same.

Work Of Our Hands: A4 signed print

    ,
Let the favour of the Lord our God rest upon us. Establish the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:17) Background: We have sung and said a version of this passage for many years since it’s inclusion in the Northumbria Community’s Celtic Daily Prayer book ‘Midday Prayer.’ We see the work of our hands through Lindisfarne Scriptorium as a ministry of providing resources to help people spread the Christian message and to support each other. We hope that through our artwork and writings, people are blessed and encounter a deeper relationship with God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Printing and Sizing: This item is 297mm x 210mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Each print is individually signed by Mary Fleeson and is packaged in a cellophane wrapper with a descriptive backing sheet explaining more about the piece and the Scriptorium.

To You This Day: A4 signed print

    ,
My God I give to You this day, Each word I think and say and pray, Each action and each small step, on the way. I give my life to You this day. Background: The prayer in this piece, inspired by an old children's prayer, could be used every day but the thinking behind it is as a prayer to say on each day of Lent. The time before Easter is a chance to prepare for the revelation of new Life. We may take time to consider that victory of life over death, what it means to truly die to self and what difference it makes to the everyday activity of living here in the world. The blossom flowers, growing from what appears to be the dead branches of a desolate tree, neatly symbolise life persisting in the face of death as we are reminded every Spring when the seemingly barren begins to live again. These and Other Things: A4 signed print

    ,
He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (John 21:6 NIV) Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. (John 21:25 NIV) Background: This passage has for many years been significant to us as a family and to the Scriptorium as a business and we have used an image of it as our logo for many years. To me this story of Jesus after the resurrection speaks of trust and faith. There must have been something about the voice of the stranger who shouted from the shore, the disciples couldn’t tell it was Jesus and they weren’t expecting to hear His voice but the tone of His voice perhaps held a strangely familiar authority and conviction. The disciples had experienced a dark, unproductive night - Jesus told them, at the point they were probably thinking of giving up, to try fishing again in a different place. Our lives often experience unproductive 'dark nights', times when nothing seems to be going right. Our resources, often both physical and emotional, are on empty and we can’t see our way towards fruitfulness and restoration. The message of the 'casting nets' is to trust God's guidance, to keep trying (perhaps push at new doors, try new ways) and to have faith that however dark and however long, each night will end in a new day. "Come and have breakfast!" (John 21:12) Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock

Sing For Joy: A4 signed print

    ,
Let the heavens be glad, Let the earth rejoice Let the land exult - and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy. Bible Passages: Psalm 96: 11-12 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Luke 19:37-40 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’, ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’ ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’ Background: We are completely dependent on our environment, created, like us, from dust. Saying that the trees will sing or the stones cry out is not to give them some fantastical sentience but to remind us that the miracle of their existence reflects God’s glory, power and creativity, and we do the same.
