Words: Follow Him Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us...'This is a call to follow Jesus, His way to the Father. Interspersed with the meandering of life and time depicted by the woven knotwork we see others who have followed and from whom we can learn more about God and how to follow Him. The characters are Zaccheus the tax collector; Saul/Paul who had a dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus; Jesus' disciples who left everything to follow; the shepherds who dared to visit a new born King; the wise men from the east who followed a star for years, knowing that it was God's sign to the world; Brendan who left his home to go wherever God would take him and Aidan whose passion for God enabled him to communicate with the barbarous Northumbrians!' Words: None Background: Artist Mary Fleeson comments...'The design of ‘Journey’ was an experiment inspired by a manuscript at the British Library. The parchment I saw had been painted with a rich purple-red ink and the script was formed using gold ink which appeared coppery in colour. Therefore I formed my cross in a similar way and to achieve the layered textural depth effect I experimented with collage. The working title for the piece was ‘Unknown Journey’, its layers representing C.S Lewis’ view of death as an ‘onward and upward’ journey to a better, brighter, more ‘real’ place.' Created: 2014 Psalm 121 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm – he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and for evermore. Background: The words of Psalm 121 are a great comfort to believers even today. To be reassured that the God who created you cares enough about you, as an individual, to keep a protective eye on your daily activities is wonderful. But what about the times when we feel abandoned? The times when we feel like the ground beneath us is crumbling and God is perhaps too busy elsewhere to be concerned about our little life? Those are the times when we need to read those words and see them as more than comfort, they are in fact a promise. Jesus said to His disciples, and therefore to his followers today, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Life may not always be easy, we were never promised that, but we are not expected to live God’s will in our own strength, our ‘help comes from the Lord’ in many diverse ways, sometimes we just have to be willing to accept it. Background: This piece was the result of meditating on what defines a Christ centred life . I wanted to show the fruitfulness that comes from a life rooted in the cross of Christ and the refreshment and cleansing available to us. In the spirals I wanted to express the vibrancy of a Christ-centred life and four aspects of life; birth, death, spirituality and growth. Each arm of the spiral, each aspect of life, is cross hatched and bumpy with patches of light and dark, showing the erratic nature of living. Each arm ends but its outline turns back towards the cross, showing that everything came from God and returns to God. Francesca writes: 'Who is it that you seek?' features a star motif, referencing the guidance of the wise men by the star as they searched for the King of Kings. For this question I chose the contrasting colour of lemon yellow for the brightness of the star.

So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Matthew 10:31 (NIV) Background: The song ‘More Than Many Sparrows’ [http://www.andyseveryn.com/video] was written by Andy Severyn who was a leader of the 'Cross Purposes' School Mission Team of the Sion Catholic Community. I owned a much loved tape that included the song after meeting another member of the Schools Team when performing Christian Theatre and Dance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and played it to stretching point! As some songs do, it remained a favourite that I returned to year after year and it was a pleasure to use it as inspiration for my work. Holy Island is blessed to be home to more than its fair share of sparrows too and they are a daily reminder of how much God loves and values each one of us. Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that...'"Caim" was originally designed as a CD cover for an album of prayers set to music by the same name, therefore the imagery reflects themes of the music included, however as is often the case the illustration evolved into something which speaks beyond the obvious inspiration. The hand seems to reach out in a loving, gentle gesture to caress the face of the Creator, symbolised by the star (Revelation 22:16 ‘I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.’). The complex knotwork intersperses three overlapping circles which represent the Trinity and the patterns and colours are life patterns, weaving and merging, coloured by experiences, actions and reactions.' The journey of life can be directed by Him if we allow it and its twists and turns will be clearer if seen in the light He gives.
