Who is it that you Seek?: Print

    ,
An A4 print. Original artwork by Francesca Ross with the artwork "Who is it that you Seek?" Francesca writes: 'Who is it that you seek?' features a star motif, referencing the guidance of the wise men by the star as they searched for the King of Kings. For this question I chose the contrasting colour of lemon yellow for the brightness of the star.

How then Shall we Live?: Print

    ,
An A4 print. Original artwork by Francesca Ross with the artwork "How then Shall we Live?" Francesca writes: 'How then shall we live? ' has circles of ripples, which echo how our lives and actions have an impact on others, and how others impact our lives. I used the aqua blue to make it look like water.

How then Shall we Sing?: Print

    ,
An A4 print. Original artwork by Francesca Ross with the artwork "How then Shall we Sing the Lord's Song in a Strange Land?" Francesca writes: 'How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?' The development of the design started with a stave and a treble and bass clef, and then I added swirling interlinking lines to echo the complexity of music twisting and turning in unexpected directions. I chose purple as a colour of kingship of the Lord whose song we are singing.

    Candle: A4 Print

    ,
Print featuring original artwork by Francesca Ross. Francesca writes: The seed for this design began with the Celtic Daily Prayer Book 2 meditations for Day 3 and Day 31 which are excerpts from William Brodrick's The Sixth Lamentation, and in particular the line 'We have to be candles'. I started with a layout doodled in the notebook I carry round with me. By the time we were on retreat at Nether Springs in February, I had most of the design in place, and the colours worked out, and included a motif from my 'Wings and Waves Celtic Cross' design to tie it in with previous artwork. We had seen the effects of Storm Arwen in toppling trees and taking out power lines, but it seemed to me that that would be nothing compared to a storm at sea, where the squall would not just fill the sky but the sea that the boat rested on would be wild and incredibly dangerous. That led to the design of the border as a surrounding stormy sea, but with the candle flames reaching out into it.

Hope and Pray: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: In the hope rejoicing; in the tribulation enduring; in the prayer persevering; Romans 12:12 Literal Standard Version Bible: Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Romans 12:12 NIV Background: Artist Mary Fleeson says: "Being joyful isn’t about having a permanent grin on your face or always feeling happy... when I first started to look into what it meant to be a Christian, as a teenager with the accompanying hormone roller-coaster, I found it really difficult to understand what ‘joy’ meant. I was told it was a deep-down assurance, more lasting than ‘happy’ and something I could only truly experience with God’s help. It took me a long time to realise that joy wasn’t something that was affected by mood or even circumstance. I've learnt not to underestimate the power of mind and body on spirit and I still find the balance between them difficult to achieve, but joy is sustained by hope and faith and the love beyond measure of our Creator. Patience in affliction is great advice isn’t it? There are probably few of us that could say that we’re good at being patient even when we know that it will help us to cope, giving ourselves permission to rest and step back from our usual busyness can feel like giving up or giving in but fighting against the needs of your body or mind will only delay their healing. Faithfulness in prayer is breathing for the soul, it is our constant communication with God. It isn’t something we just do on Sundays or at set times but it is in every conversation, every action and every thought. When we pray constantly, we are inviting God to be in our lives, to nurture us and guide us - what could be better? Printing and Sizing: This item is 105mm x 148mm and is printed on 300gsm gloss card stock. Light and Salvation: A6 greetings card

    ,
Bible: The Lord is my light and salvation. Psalm 27 Background: Artist Mary Fleeson says: "This piece was created in memory of my Dad, he loved everything to do with the sea and had an unshakeable trust in his Heavenly Father and the power of prayer. He was an artist who saw past the clutter of human impact and painted scenes in a way that captured the timeless essence of a place. My Dad taught me to always push the boundaries of my art, to seek my own style and to infuse life with prayer. He encouraged me and challenged me in equal measure. I miss him." Sing For Joy: A6 greetings card

    ,

Let the heavens be glad, Let the earth rejoice Let the land exult - and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy.

    Bible Passages:

Psalm 96: 11-12 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Luke 19:37-40 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!’, ‘Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’ Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, ‘Teacher, rebuke your disciples!’ ‘I tell you,’ he replied, ‘if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.’

    Background:

We are completely dependent on our environment, created, like us, from dust. Saying that the trees will sing or the stones cry out is not to give them some fantastical sentience but to remind us that the miracle of their existence reflects God’s glory, power and creativity, and we do the same.

Nothing Can Separate: A6 greetings card

    ,

    Words:

I believe that there is nothing in death or life that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the realms of the unseen that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the world as it is or shall be that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in the natural forces of the universe that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing above or below that can separate us from the love of God, Nothing in all creation that can separate us from the love of God, Which is ours through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Background:

Based on the passage in Romans 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Look out for hands reaching from above and below, the timeline from creation to the future, the strand of DNA… all reinforced with the hands spread in supplication and awe at the amazing declaration.

Never Thirst Again: A6 greetings card

    ,

John 4:13-14 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” © NIV 1984

Background: This could be used as a blessing for a Baptism, Confirmation or Ordination. This passage in John holds a powerful message of hope for a world which thirsts for that elusive ‘something’. Whether that ‘something’ is spiritual meaning, true love, happiness, security or day to day needs, God, in the man Jesus, promised that if we allow the Spirit of God into our lives then not only will our needs be met one way or another (since our idea of how to improve matters may not be God’s ways), but we will live forever with Him.

Let Our Voices: A6 greetings card

    ,

Words: Let Our Voices Rise Like Incense.

    Biblical Passages:

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders, I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth; and he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. (Revelation 5:6-8)

I will call upon thee, O Lord; make haste to me! Give ear to my voice, when I call to thee! Let my prayer be counted as incense before thee, and the lifting up of my hands as an evening sacrifice! (Psalm 141:1,2)

Work of our Hands: A6 greetings card

    ,

Let the favour of the Lord our God rest upon us.

Establish the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:17)

    Background:

We have sung and said a version of this passage for many years since its inclusion in the Northumbria Community’s Celtic Daily Prayer book ‘Midday Prayer.’ We see the work of our hands through Lindisfarne Scriptorium as a ministry of providing resources to help people spread the Christian message and to support each other. We hope that through their artwork and writings, people are blessed and encounter a deeper relationship with God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

    Wild Goose: A6 greetings card

    ,

In modern Celtic tradition the Holy Spirit is represented as a bird, but not the peaceful and serene dove landing on Jesus at his baptism.

The Wild Goose tells a different side of the Holy Spirit. To begin with, wild geese aren’t controllable, you can’t restrain a wild goose and bend it to your will. They’re raucous and loud, unlike the sweet and calming cooing of a dove, a goose’s call is strong, challenging, strident and unnerving - and just a bit scary.

In much the same way the Spirit of God can be demanding and unsettling and at times even a little scary.

Spirit of God: A6 greetings card

    ,

When Jesus was baptised the Holy Spirit appeared as a dove according to Luke 3:22 and as fire in Acts 2:1-6.

“And the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” NIV Luke 3:22

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. NIV Acts 2:1-6

    Lux Aeterna: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: None Background: This is based on an album called Lux Aeterna by David Fitzgerald. Mary drew together elements from David’s inspirations with themes from some of the tracks, such as ‘Christchild’, ‘Golgotha’ and ‘Resurrection’. The Trinity is expressed in the embracing figure of God the Father behind the cross, the dove of the Spirit and the representations of Jesus as a babe in the womb and ascending to His Father.

Love The Lord: A6 greetings card

    ,

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5 New International Version (NIV)

To love God with all that we are, with our whole self, is an enormous challenge. Our hearts and minds are easily distracted and persuaded; our souls are unfathomable, perhaps our greatest and most faithful lover of God. But to give all, consciously and subconsciously takes a continual recommitment to God's will, a constant re-examining of our relationship with our Creator and, scariest of all, a constant vulnerability to allow God to work in us.

    The Father’s Heart in Flowers

For years Margaret Brewer has delighted the church with her flower arrangements, each providing a visualisation of an important Christian teaching or presenting the gospel. This book is a collection of her teachings, along with decorative paintings of the flower arrangements that accompany them. It can be read as a daily devotional, with an inspiring message and illustrations to start each day. Or the reader can reproduce the flower arrangements as a beautiful way to share the good news of Jesus with those around.

Sounding the Seasons: 70 sonnets for the Christian Year

    , , ,
Poetry has always been a central element of Christian spirituality and is increasingly used in worship, in pastoral services and guided meditation. In Sounding the Seasons, Cambridge poet, priest and singer-songwriter Malcolm Guite transforms seventy lectionary readings into lucid, inspiring poems, for use in regular worship, seasonal services, meditative reading or on retreat. Already widely recognised, Malcolm's writing has been acclaimed by Rowan Williams and Luci Shaw, two leading contemporary religious poets. A section of practical help and advice for using poetry creatively and effectively in worship is also included.

Untamed Gospel: protest, poems and prose for the Christian year

    , , ,
Untamed Gospel complements The Bright Field and Darkness Yielding, and offers meditations, reflections, stories, prayers and poems for use throughout the church year. Each one focuses on the often startling nature of Jesus' sayings and teachings, the raw honesty of the psalms and other biblical texts, and on contemporary issues, such as mental health and displacement, seen in the light of the demands of the kingdom of God. A rich resource for worship, preaching, teaching and personal reflection throughout the year, Untamed Gospel contains hundreds of reproducible items, including seasonal reflections, stories, homilies, poems and some of Jim Cotter's last writings as he was being treated for cancer: a moving sequence of prayer poems inspired by the psalms.

    Drysalter

Winner of the 2013 Forward Poetry Prize for Best Collection; Winner of the 2013 Costa Poetry Award; Shortlisted for the 2013 T. S. Eliot Poetry Prize; Shortlisted for the 2015 Portico Prize; Michael Symmons Roberts' sixth - and most ambitious collection to date - takes its name from the ancient trade in powders, chemicals, salts and dyes, paints and cures. These poems offer a similarly potent and sensory multiplicity, unified through the formal constraint of 150 poems of 15 lines. Like the medieval psalters echoed in its title, this collection contains both the sacred and profane. Here are hymns of praise and lamentation, songs of wonder and despair, journeying effortlessly through physical and metaphysical landscapes, from financial markets and urban sprawl to deserts and dark nights of the soul. This collection is a compelling, powerful search for meaning, truth and falsehood. But, as ever in Roberts' work, this search is rooted in the tangible world, leavened by wit, contradiction, tenderness and sensuality. This is Roberts' most expansive writing yet: mystical, philosophical, earthy and elegiac. Drysalter sings of the world's unceasing ability to surprise, and the shock and dislocation of catching your own life unawares.

Timeless Beauty: in the arts and everyday life

    , , ,
Once people were instinctively tuned to the beautiful. In those distant days before the advent of the motor car and the washing machine, the electric toothbrush and the wheel, craftsmen and musicians, masons and poets, painters and dancers simply did not know how to make an ugly thing; they could not close their hearts to the light of heaven. For them countless numbers of them beauty was as necessary as the air they breathed. It gave dignity and meaning to drab and impoverished lives, and inspired great (but often brutal) civilizations in which people lived creative and useful lives. Beauty is the nourishment of the soul. It is something that gives us dignity as a species. John Lane calls us to awaken to the possibilities of a culture that recognizes the importance of beauty, and to acknowledge that we are only fully human in contact with the beautiful.

When Words Fail: God and the World of Beauty

    , , ,
Is there a sharp divide between the 'sacred' and the 'secular'? this book explores how it is possible for human beings to know God, and not just in the more conventional and obvious ways of prayer and sacrament, scripture and theology. 'When words fail' - it is then that signs and symbols, images and sounds, pictures and dreams, have to take over.  This book points the way to deeper knowlege of God through such other media, especially literature and music, art and architecture.

Be stronger than each storm in me A4 print

    , , ,
Lynda Owen-Hussey, a companion with the Northumbria Community, is a mixed media artist living on the shores of the West Coast of Ireland in County Kerry, close to the birthplace of St Brendan. These days, her work is inspired by the many gifts of the sea she encounters on walks along the shore, often pondering the life of St Brendan and the many monks of old who inhabited this land. In describing this original artwork Lynda says:

This artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Christ of the mysteries, can I trust you to be stronger than each storm in me?

We read that Brendan and his companions cried out in prayer as they encountered storms on the ocean, trusting God as they sailed on in search of the land of promise. In Mark 6 we find Jesus’s disciples in a boat straining against the wind and becoming terrified as they see Jesus walking out to them over the water. He calls out to his disciples ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ As he climbs into the boat the wind ceases. We too can cry out to God when we find ourselves in the midst of life’s storms trusting that Jesus is with us always.

Help me to journey beyond the familiar 210mm square print

Lynda Owen-Hussey, a companion with the Northumbria Community, is a mixed media artist living on the shores of the West Coast of Ireland in County Kerry, close to the birthplace of St Brendan. These days, her work is inspired by the many gifts of the sea she encounters on walks along the shore, often pondering the life of St Brendan and the many monks of old who inhabited this land. In describing this original artwork Lynda says:

Painted whilst on retreat at Nether Springs, the Mother House of the Northumbria Community,  this artwork is inspired by a verse in the Northumbria Community’s Brendan Liturgy:

Lord, I will trust You, help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.

Brendan’s journey begins as his heart is stirred by a vision that takes him beyond his present circumstances and surroundings. In Genesis 12 we find Abram, who like Brendan, followed the call of God to leave the familiar comforts of home and venture towards the land of promise. Sometimes we hear that call ourselves, but oftentimes it is discomfort or the unexpected which proves to be the catalyst that opens us afresh to seeking out new ways as we journey in trust.

I will trust in the darkness and know that my times are still in Your hand.

Brendan and his companions spent years on the sea as they searched for, and eventually found, the promised land. In Psalm 31, King David in the midst of difficulty places his trust in God recalling that his times are in God’s hands. Likewise we are called to trust God in the dark and difficult desert days we can find ourselves in.

    Blessed Are: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 2015 Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. (John 20:29) Background: To be a Christian is to believe in the seemingly impossible. We don’t have the luxury of being able to actually see and touch and hear the voice of Jesus as the Disciples did, we have to settle for a second hand experience of Jesus, but is that entirely true? Teresa of Avila (1515–1582) sums up how we can experience Jesus today and by doing so see the fruits of the legacy He left. Christ has no body but yours, No hands, no feet on earth but yours, Yours are the eyes with which he looks Compassion on this world, Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good, Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, Yours are the eyes, you are his body. When we willingly behave as Jesus did we meet Him in the people and places, we meet Him in the darkness and the pain and in the joy and the hope of living. It isn’t the same as placing our hand in the crucifixion wounds; or sitting at His feet, listening to His voice and the message He gave; and Jesus knew that His followers would feel that loss. So the last words that he spoke on earth were a blessing specifically for you. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Christ is the Light: A4 signed print

    ,
Created: 1998 Words: Christ is the Light, May He illumine your path Christ is the Way, May He direct your life Christ is the Breath, May He feed your soul Background: The words were inspired by the Celtic Christian belief that God, as Father, Son and Spirit, infuse every part of daily life. The journey of life can be directed by Him if we allow it and its twists and turns will be clearer if seen in the light He gives. Printing and Sizing: This item is 210mm x 297mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock using our in-house printer. Sister Wendy’s Bible Treasury: Stories and wisdom through the eyes of great painters

    ,
From the majesty of Genesis to the mystery of Revelation, the Bible contains some of the world's most powerful stories and sublime wisdom. It is also the inspiration for some the greatest pictures ever painted. Adan and Eve expelled from Paradise, Jacob wrestling with the angel, God appearing to Moses in the burning bush, Samson betrayed by Delilah, David slaying Goliath, the beauty of Bathsheba, the wisdom of Solomon: these are among the dramatic episodes and memorable characters from the Old Testament, portrayed here by artists such as Masaccio, Raphael, Rubens, Degas and Rembrandt Then, in the New Testament, the figure of Jesus takes centre stage, with his compelling parables and miracles depicted by artists such as Poussin, Delacroix and van Gogh, and with major events in his ministry – from the nativity to the resurrection – painted by Botticelli, Piero, Duccio, Leonardo, Giotto, Titian and Craigie Aitchison. Commenting on these and many other fine works, Sister Wendy takes you on a journey into the heart of the Bible and of biblical art, making this a book you will want to turn to again and again.

Stories are so important. Everything we are and everything we do revolves around the big story of God's love for us and how we respond to it. Storytelling is a vital skill for everyone in ministry of any kind. In Tell it Together well-known author and storyteller Renita Boyle combines stories that have been written to read well aloud with tools for groups to share them effectively. The stories can be used on their own, to enhance a theme or Bible passage, or alongside other activities as the basis for clubs or creative worship gatherings and festivals. They don't just retell the story, they draw us in. There are no listeners here: all are participants!

The Artist’s Rule: nurturing your creative soul with monastic wisdom

    , , , , ,
, nature, solitude, artists, creativity The Artist's Rule: Nurturing Your Creative Soul with Monastic Wisdom by Christine Valters Paintner, author of Water, Wind, Earth, and Fire, invites readers to discover and develop their creative gifts in a spirit of prayer and reflection. This twelve-week course draws on the insights and practices of Benedictine spirituality to explore the interplay between contemplation and creativity. Sumarised in the phrase 'pray and work,' The Rule of St. Benedict provides the inspiration for Christine Valters Paintner's newest exploration of the mutually nourishing relationship between contemplative practices and creative expression. Artists of all stripes and stations in life - poets or painters, potters or photographers - will discover how traditions of Benedictine, Celtic, and desert spirituality can offer new sources of inspiration for their work. Themes like 'Sacred Tools and Sacred Space', 'Creative Solitude and Community,' and 'Nature as a Source of Revelation and Inspiration' are enriched by Paintner's perceptive discussion and enhanced by insightful quotations from well-known artists and writers. Ideally formatted for faith sharing groups and parish retreats, this guide offers suggestions for grounding both the creative and the spiritual life through three basic practices: walking, lectio divina, and journaling. The Artist's Rule is supplemented with online resources, including guided meditation podcasts, video lessons, and discussions.

Eyes of the Heart; photography as Christian contemplative practice

    ,
Eyes of the Heart by Christine Valters Paintner explores photography as a spiritual practice from a Christian perspective. Christine builds on the process of contemplative creativity in her book The Artist’s Rule (also available from the community bookshop) by adapting the monastic practice of lectio divina (sacred reading) into a form of visio divina (sacred seeing). A spiritual director and Benedictine oblate, she guides readers through a new way of spiritual observation – through the lens of a camera – and in receiving images, not simply taking them. She writes that, ‘My hope is that, in exploring the language of photography, you [develop] new portals into the your own experience and awareness of God. Shadow and light, framing, colour, reflections, and mirrors all offer us metaphors for ways of understanding how we might move towards seeing ourselves and God with the eyes of the heart.’ She invites us to use our cameras to help us to release our expectations of what we think we ought to see and learn to discover what is actually there. And then helps us to bring this kind of interaction into our everyday lives.

    The Love Is Activity Book

This little book contains meditations, prayers and activities about Love, inspired by the verses in the book of Corinthians. In Paul's first letter to the Christians of Corinth in Greece, he spends a long time instructing, advising, challenging and encouraging the young church there. He hasn't visited for a few years and he knows of the immorality in the wealthy pagan city and the divisions that have emerged within the church. Although he aims not to diminish the message of the cross with 'wisdom and eloquence', he gave us, in chapter thirteen, some of the most powerful and well-known verses of the New Testament.

Multicoloured Prayers includes sixteen colouring pages which are meditations to help focus and inspire. It is ideal for retreats, holidays, everyday quiet times and for buzzing minds wanting to spend time focusing on God. Mary writes in the forward of Multicoloured Prayers: 'This book is a collection of original images to colour, some are outlines of pieces I have created for Lindisfarne Scriptorium and some are completely new designs. The aim of the book is to help you relax, to inspire you, to allow God to draw near you and speak to you through the works. As you add colour and life to the pages and ponder over the words don't worry about going over the lines! Allow the child within to emerge for a while and have fun!'

    Love Is: A6 greetings card

    ,
Created: 1999 Words: Love is always patient and kind. Love is not boastful or conceited. It is never rude, and never seeks its own advantage. It does not take offence or store up grievances. Love does not rejoice in wrong doing but finds its joy in the truth. It always ready to make allowances, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes. These remain: faith, hope and love, and the greatest is love. Background: Based on 1 Corinthians 13 (v. 4-13). A good exercise is to replace the word 'love' with your own name to see if you match up - not an easy task but one worthy of aspiring to! Printing and Sizing: This item is 105mmX148mm and is printed on 300gsm gloss card stock. Each card is blank inside, has its title and copyright details on the back and is individually wrapped in cellophane with an envelope.

    Glory: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: Glory to God in the highest, And peace to his people on earth. Background: Mary tells us that this is ...'A Christmas image which expresses God’s desire for us to enjoy peace in this world and reminding us that offering to God our unconditional worship, restoring the wonder, majesty and glory of the Godhead, is part of achieving that goal of peace. The colours and lines of the background are reminiscent of the Aurora Borealis which we saw a few years ago over the Island, the colours were vivid reds & greens with golds, yellows and blues flickering against an inky black sky. We wondered if the record in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle which says, “… immense flashes of lightening, and fiery dragons were seen flying in the air...” referred to a rare but brilliant display of the Aurora in the North East of England. We were amazed at the drama of the fiery sky and could easily imagine a less informed society being attributing its source to dragons!' Life Journey CD

    ,
David Fitzgerald and Dave Bainbridge produce an instrumental album based around the artwork, prayers and poems of Mary's Life Journey book. The music on this album was originally commissioned and conceived as an interpretation in sound of the incredibly inspiring imagery and prose contained within Mary Fleeson's wonderful book Life Journey. In that it has undoubtedly succeeded, but has also transcended the original brief as the unique chemistry between the two musicians that co-founded Iona has once again produced a deeply spiritual, timeless work. A completely instrumental album (apart from some choral samples), the two Davids came together and spent several days improvising as they poured over the book and responded to the words and pictures. Over the next year, these improvisations were gradually shaped into complete compositions which follow the chapters of the book. Dave B relates:

In many ways this felt like we were returning to the source of the inspiration that birthed IONA the band. IONA was born out of David and I improvising together during soundchecks on Adrian Snell gigs back at the end of the 1980's and David's mystical experience of God's powerful Presence one dark night on the Island of Lindisfarne. This book was also birthed by Mary on Lindisfarne and much of its imagery is inspired by that amazing place. At certain points during the album you can hear sounds that Mary's husband Mark recorded on the island - the St Mary's church bell, the sea lapping on nearby St Cuthbert's Isle, the sound of the seabirds.

Christ Centred Living: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: None Background: Mary tells us that...'This piece was the result of meditating on what defines a Christ centred life . I wanted to show the fruitfulness that comes from a life rooted in the cross of Christ and the refreshment and cleansing available to us. In the spirals I wanted to express the vibrancy of a Christ-centred life and four aspects of life; birth, death, spirituality and growth. Each arm of the spiral, each aspect of life, is cross hatched and bumpy with patches of light and dark, showing the erratic nature of living. Each arm ends but its outline turns back towards the cross, showing that everything came from God and returns to God.' Caim: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: None Background: Mary tells us that...‘Caim’ was originally designed as a CD cover for an album of prayers set to music by the same name, therefore the imagery reflects themes of the music included, however as is often the case the illustration evolved into something which speaks beyond the obvious inspiration. The hand seems to reach out in a loving, gentle gesture to caress the face of the Creator, symbolised by the star (Revelation 22:16 ‘I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, and the bright Morning Star.’). The complex knotwork intersperses three overlapping circles which represent the Trinity and the patterns and colours are life patterns, weaving and merging, coloured by experiences, actions and reactions. Come to Me: A4 signed print

    ,
Words: Matthew 11:28 (New American Standard Bible ©1995) "Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that...'Jesus offers rest to those of us who are burdened with the weights of sin, fear, worry and the absence of purpose. The loads we carry may be hardly noticeable at first but if not released into Gods waiting hand have a habit of becoming heavier until their weight affects our every movement, slowing us spiritually and eventually crippling our effectiveness as the human children of our Heavenly Father. When Jesus spoke the words it was thought that He was addressing the Jews who were burdened and trapped by the complex and numerous laws and traditions but it is an offer which He makes to everyone today. Often the things in our lives that keep us from loving God and each other completely are burdens of our own making and are tightly bound with our human tendency to sin and then to hide from the God who can reveal those sins to us so we end up carrying a burden of guilt and fear. To God our burdens are tiny and light. He wants to relieve us of them. It may take some effort and courage to recognise and release our heavy loads but it is worth it to be able to stand upright and skip onwards (metaphorically speaking) in life without constraint.' Remember Me: A6 greetings card

    ,
Background: Artist Mary Fleeson tells us that... " ‘Remember’ is a celebration of Christ’s words to His disciples, 23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:23-25, NIV The image includes the empty tomb and the angel standing outside with Jesus and Mary in the garden, the road to Emmaus, a bright star – to remind us of His birth and the light He brought to a fallen world and Jesus carrying the cross as a symbol of carrying the sin of the world. The rich knotwork pattern behind is the backdrop to the royal story of The King of the Universe. The large knot reminds us of our life journey and how God wants us to be immersed, surrounded and sharing in His journey." This item is 105 x 148mm and is printed on 300gsm card stock. Magnificat: A6 greetings card

    ,
Words: My soul magnifies the Lord My spirit rejoices in God my Saviour Background: Artist Mary Fleeson comments that this design is based on the words attributed to Mary, the mother of Jesus, her praises to God for His blessing and wonder at the great responsibility He has given to her. The figure in ‘Magnificat’ was designed to be deliberately androgenous so that anyone could confidently repeat Mary’s words. The woven strands rising like incense smoke from the vibrantly coloured figure are prayers coming from all parts of the body to symbolise that prayer is an energetic, body, mind and spirit activity. The plant drawn behind the wording grows upwards to represent the fruitfulness of a life steeped in prayer and wholly given to God’s purpose.' Journey: A6 greetings card

Therefore I formed my cross in a similar way and to achieve the layered textural depth effect I experimented with collage. Source: "The Lord's Prayer in the Principal Languages, Dialects and Versions of the World, printed in Type and Vernaculars of the Different Nations, compiled and published by G.F. Bergholtz", Chicago, Illinois, 1884. Translation for ‘Our Father’: Our Father in heaven rich, Thy name be blessed I wish, Lead us Lord into thy bliss, Let us never thy riches miss. Let us Lord accept alone That thy will be ever done Also as it is in heaven In earth may it be even, The heaven bread that lasteth today Give us Lord this same day, Forgive us Lord to our bone All that we have here misdone, Also as we wisely forgave While we in this world live All that here us misdo And we beseech thee too, Lead us Lord to our testing And shield us from all evil thing. The modern version interwoven with the old: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Anna's first solo album includes some of her 'signature' pieces as well as some songs of her own. Some of you will recognise familiar words from the Complines in Celtic Daily Prayer drawn from Carmina Gadelica and other traditional sources. Here they are set to Anna's own music which has emerged over the years of saying and singing these night-time prayers with her children, Joel and Martha. Anna says, 'I hope you will want to play this album often and that it will capture something of the rhythm of the tides, the sounds of the island and also its stillness.'
