Bereavement: Bible readings for special times

    ,
This book of 24 undated reflections draws comfort and inspiration from the Bible and from experience for those who are going through a time of bereavement, as well as providing insight for those wanting to support others who are bereaved. Jean Watson suggests how it might feel to get through the dark days and to move, however slowly, from `getting by' with help, to `getting a life' in which living with loss goes alongside the gains in terms of new insights on faith and life and a greater ability to empathise with others.

Mercy : Life in the Season of Dying

Over the years, Peter Roebbelen has had the painful privilege of walking with too many friends as they prepared to die. His journey with them has been intensely personal and altogether unsafe. As he grieved and reflected on their deaths, what began to take shape were insights into life and living. He began to understand the many ways in which God was bestowing gifts of life upon his friends in their seasons of dying, and that on many occasions, the dying were living better than he was - they were more fully alive, more fully present, more keenly aware of what was important and what was needed. This book is filled with their stories, their wisdom and their tears. There are many helpful books about the dying process and about coping with loss and what to expect as one journeys through grief. This is not one of those books. This book looks at the possibility of life in the face of death's certainty. With the dying and their caregivers showing the way, this is a book of thoughts, stories and reflections, about finding life in the season of dying.

The Art of Healing Prayer : Bringing Christ’s Wholeness to Broken People

The Art of Healing Prayer aims to help both clergy and laity to develop a greater understanding of those who come seeking healing, and to become skilled in praying for such people biblically, imaginatively and sensitively. The authors recognize that this is a costly ministry, requiring counsellors to find time in their own often busy lives to guide others, and necessitating that they continue to be open to the gifts of God's grace. However, it is a ministry that often results in joy and transformation, as those healed from long standing inner woundedness become sources of goodness and healing for others.

    Praying our Goodbyes

    , ,
Everyone has unique goodbyes--times of losing someone or something that has given life meaning and value. With the touch of a poet, Joyce Rupp offers her wisdom on "these experiences of leaving behind and moving on, the stories of union and separation that are written in all our hearts." Praying Our Goodbyes, Rupp says, is about the spirituality of change. It is a book for anyone who has experienced loss, whether a job change, the end of a relationship, the death of a loved one, a financial struggle, a mid-life crisis, or an extended illness. It is designed to help readers reflect, ritualize, and re-orient themselves--to help heal the hurts caused by goodbyes and the anxieties encountered when one season of life ends and another begins.

Time to Live : The Beginner’s Guide to Saying Goodbye

    ,
"Ann writes honestly about death and dying. It is easy to read, written from the heart and mixes philosophical /spiritual thought with highly practical ideas about ways forward. Ann writes from the perspective of her strong Christian faith and her writings are backed up with clear, useful, encouraging Scripture readings. As a Christian I found it very inspiring and hopeful. Death is a certainty for all of us, yet her society hides it away and pretends in collusion with her own unconscious minds that we are immortal. Ann tackles the subject comprehensively and uses a mix of personal stories, quotes, philosophical thinkers, poetry and scripture to ilustrate her ideas. The book flows well and I liked the way it illustrated the pitfalls one can slip into , from denial to an overwhelming belief in healing that can prevent one from preparing both spiritually and practically. I loved her positivity and encouragement to focus on love - the love of God, of each other and of ourselves. I have taken away some practical ideas to implement. For instance I have a lasting power of attorney but now realise how useful making an advance decision will be. Thank you Ann for this book."
